Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

No books are considered canon, but you shouldn’t let that stop you!

ValueSubtracted OP Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Well then I guess it’s an irrelevant question and you can decide for yourself, no?

ValueSubtracted OP Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Whether something “fits” and whether something is canon are completely different questions.

If you’re wondering what “the fans” think, and you’re a fan, you already have the best possible answer to the question.

The article is accurately reporting what Paramount themselves have said.

Paramount+ announced today that the service is now Canada’s streaming home of the iconic Star Trek catalogue featuring over 800 episodes of binge-worthy episodes and 12 feature films. Kicking off today, Season 1 and the current season to date of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available to stream on Paramount+, and the library will continue to build throughout the month with Star Trek: The Next Generation available on August 8, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on August 15, and more. These iconic series join Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, already streaming on the service.

You seem to be complaining that Picard wasn’t there several months ago, but no one is claiming it was, and I don’t think anyone was claiming it was back then, either.

So… Paramount+ is just one of the homes for Star Trek then.

You seem to misunderstand that, as well - all it means is that CTV Sci-Fi will continue airing the new series on TV. They will all stream on Paramount+.

That’s a shame, because what you’re saying is very confusing.

I’m thinking about kicking the tires on Paramount+, but I really wish it was possible to browse their library first.

How did Paramount+ lose a subscriber in this scenario?

ValueSubtracted OP Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

If Paramount+ acquiring the rights to shows that you like ensures that you’ll never be a subscriber, I suspect that potential was never really there…

In The Original Series episode “The Menagerie,” Kirk noted he’d met Pike only once, “when he was promoted to Fleet Captain.”

Well, no.

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?

KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.

KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.

Kirk says he met Pike when he was promoted to fleet captain, and also that he took over the Enterprise from him. Those could have been separate occasions, and there’s no real reason there couldn’t be others in between that he didn’t mention to Mendez.

Available analytics have placed it at roughly the same level of demand as SNW - often slightly ahead, but close enough that I’d call it even.

If you’re using an ad blocker, that’s probably why. StarTrek.com videos have the advantage of being region-free, but they don’t like ad blockers.

Elevating a notorious enemy general to the position of ambassador in a handful of years is a total Starfleet move.

Re: the transporters.

Patterns in the buffer usually degrade over time - The TNG Technical Manual says patterns can last about seven minutes before degradation begins. Obviously, Scotty was able to extend this dramatically, though with only a 50% success rate.

They did touch on this in SNW season one, when M’Benga said he had to rematerialize his daughter periodically. However, the timeframe, while not specified, seemed a helluva lot longer than seven minutes.

ValueSubtracted OP Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

You’re certainly right that there’s some wiggle room, though “Counterpoint” has the advantage of having shown the pattern degradation occurring.

Personal attacks are out of line.

Can someone give me adivice on how/where to get back into star trek?

As a kid i loved watching the next generation and deep space 9 with my dad. Ive always liked sci fi, more of a (stargate fan) and wanted to get back into star trek, but Im just so lost on timelines and whats going on. There are like 6 kirks and I have no idea how/where to get started with watching this again.

Jonathan Frakes on Directing Next Generation, Lower Decks

This interview goes assorted places, but it has a small interesting bit about next year's Discovery finale.

“I directed the first half of the finale of Season 5, which turned out to be the real finale... And then [‘Discovery’ executive producer and director] Olatunde Osunsanmi had to go back up and do two or three days of new stuff to actually make the finale the finale." https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/jonathan-frakes-star-trek-director-strange-new-worlds-lower-decks-crossover-1235680140/

I really hope they were able to come up with something satisfying with those reshoots. The series deserves a good sendoff.

ValueSubtracted Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Yes. Every time I see someone make this comparison, which is unsettlingly often, I think it’s absolutely insane.

Anyone else out there who actually really loved Discovery's S1 style of Klingons?

I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...

ValueSubtracted Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

I thought those early Klingons were super weird and scary because they were just so alien.

Absolutely. And the costuming choices they made, and the different aesthetic approaches to each Great House, show an amazing amount of thought and care. They’re one big, scary, alien, fractured family.

ValueSubtracted Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

we’re the odd ones for saying “but wait how is this supposed to take place in the same timeline?”

I just think it points to a failure of imagination more than anything else.

@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

I really think a lot of the support for the Klingon redesign and other revisionist aspects of Discovery/the current era of trek it spawned comes from a “but the Original Series is cringe fail and LAME.

Huge if true. Can you provide some examples of people saying that? I can’t seem to find any in this thread.

Who said anything about rules? I’m just wondering if what you’re saying has any basis in, you know, reality.

ValueSubtracted Mod ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Hmm yes a very apt comparison, and not at all a complete strawman.

ValueSubtracted Mod ,

Quote me, with a link, where I said something about the rules.

And I’m putting the mod hat on now, because being truthful is a rule here, so you’d better be 100% honest and accurate with what you provide.

If it’s for Star Trek day, it might be a single event, and not a wide release.

‘Planet X’ TNG crossover and more! Last week for July Star Trek ebook deals. ( www.simonandschuster.com )

If you’re not familiar, every month the main publisher of Trek fiction, Simon & Schuster puts out an offering of more than a half dozen ebooks for $ 0.99 in Canada and the US and at a similar low price in some other countries....

Those “Dominion War” 2-parters are odd - the TNG books are an original story, but the DS9 ones are adaptations of “Call to Arms” and “Sacrifice of Angels”.
