‘In the US they think we’re communists!’ The 70,000 workers showing the world another way to earn a living ( www.theguardian.com )

The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the globe’s largest industrial co-operative, with workers paying for the right to share in its profits – and its losses. In return for giving more to their employer, they expect more back.

think we're Communists

It'd be cooler if you were.

But definitely cooperatives would be a HUGE improvement over what we have now.

bdonvr ,

Maybe it's just my accent but the way I naturally do 'whaling" doesn't affect the meter.

Like, "dubya-atche-ay-el-aye-en-gee"

I presume you'd do "double-yoo"?

An annular eclipse happens when the moon is farther out, making it appear smaller than the sun. So when it covers it, you still see a ring of sun. Cool, but not spectacular. You need special glasses for sun viewing the entire time. It looks like so:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e7/2023_Annual_Eclipse.jpg

A total solar eclipse is when the moon is closer and appears as large or larger than the sun, completely blocking it. This creates a temporary night-like environment for a small section of the earth. It also makes it so that you can view the sun’s outer atmosphere, which extends away from the sun in ghostly white outcroppings. This is always there, but the sun’s surface is so bright it usually drowns it out. It appears about as bright as a full moon, viewable with the naked eye. The moon itself becomes absolutely, mesmerizingly black. Even very-science minded persons have described it as a religious experience

Trader Joe’s is owned by the OTHER Aldi, which is related historically but entirely separate from the Aldi stores in the US.

Interestingly the US is the only country to have both companies other than Germany itself, and even there one is in one half of the country and the other in the other.

Mercedes-Benz has a plant in Alabama I know the UAW got its eyes on.

This very important strike you probably haven't heard of has now been going on for about 6 months

You probably haven’t heard of the battle pitting BCTGM Union Local 390G against International Flavors (IFF) in Memphis, TN, USA. But with workers who are mega-exploited and a company that refuses to stand down, it has become one of the most relevant for the working class....

bdonvr ,

Fuck I feel that 12 hours with no overtime… I work 60 hours a week with no overtime. Hourly

How do I start some shit, I don’t know how much longer I can do this

bdonvr ,

Wrong, I’m a truck driver and therefore exempt.

I work in the office 99% of the time… but once or twice a month I do have to drive.

Oh what a lovely country I live in.

www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/…/19-flsa-motor-carrier

The employee’s duties must include the performance, either regularly or from time to time, of safety-affecting activities on a motor vehicle used in transportation on public highways in interstate or foreign commerce. Employees must perform such duties as a driver, driver’s helper, loader, or mechanic. Employees performing such duties meet the duties requirement of the exemption regardless of the proportion of “safety affecting activities” performed

bdonvr ,

Yeah but I am driving a 53’ semi and could reasonably be asked to go across state lines so I would still be exempt.

(generally us office staff would only cover shorter stuff if a driver calls out and nobody else can cover but it could reasonably happen)

bdonvr ,

Seems pretty clear cut unfortunately. “Employees performing such duties meet the duties requirement of the exemption regardless of the proportion of “safety affecting activities” performed”

I hate to break it to you, but what do you think the Gaza Strip is?

And miss me with that “b… but Biden came back and negotiated sick days for them!” Horseshit. He got them a pitiful FRACTION of the days they asked for, and didn’t address any of their other demands whatsoever. Such as ending Precision Scheduled Railroading, which may have been a factor in the East Palestine disaster.

There’s been a weird narrative going around even on Lemmy every time this is mentioned that somehow Biden was actually a genius in that and everyone won.

bdonvr ,

They got what, 4 days out of 15 they asked for and nothing else? He’s not a good negotiator.

Rail strikes are common in a lot of the world and they seem to do just fine.

And in any case, the strike doesn’t have to be all or nothing. They can do limited and partial strikes. They could do some days on and off.

This “oh the economy would’ve imploded and thousands would die” narrative is probably partially coming from industry propaganda.

“Billionaires in my opinion don’t have a right to exist,” says Shawn Fain

My respect for him only grows.

bdonvr ,

Oh fuck yes

Though last time I went there was some dude working there with literally the Waffle House logo tattooed on his bicep. That was some sad shit

bdonvr ,

Well if you’re being forced to repay $138,000 good chance you go destitute anyway. May as well fuck em over for it

But yeah I know easier said than done realistically unless someone is willing to support you.

bdonvr ,

It’s not like companies are less greedy in Europe, they just know the culture won’t let them fuck around with Union busting.

If they think they can get away with it here they absolutely will.

The more I hear about this guy, the more I like him.

Look into Hours of Service for US truck drivers.

70 hours per 8 days, up to 14 hours working per day with 11 of those driving.

There’s a required 30 minute break before you reach 8 hours, but a couple years ago they redefined it such that it just had to be 30 minutes not driving. So now the time I spend unloading the truck at the destination counts as a “break” for me.

That’s the federal rules, but my state has its own HOS. (These can apply when not moving across state borders, as the federal government only has jurisdiction over INTERstate commerce). The state HOS is 80 hours in 8 days, 16 hours working, 12 driving. No breaks needed.
