Costco aint much better and are very anti union, the warehouse workers get treated better than their counterparts at Walmart but the company doesn’t give a fuck about its workers, just its image of being ‘one of the good ones’. Their response to workers in Virginia forming a union is pretty telling, they also don’t give out a annual cost of living raise even for “exceptional workers”, its maxes out at 3%

cmbabul ,

Yes because they don’t want a union to form because then Costco loses control and potentially their reputation. Even if you like you’re job, which I know from personal experience many a Costco do, being in a union is good, it give you a say in the way your work life goes. Costco does not want that which is why they play the song and dance, and yes some of that does equate to a better situation than similar companies, but they are still paying the lowest they believe they can get away with . Being better than their competitors like Walmart, Amazon, and Target is a really low bar

cmbabul ,

Correct, maintaining their image as a “good company” is extremely important to Costco and their success as a business. They don’t even give out a 3.7% cost of living raise to employees that received “excellent” annual reviews, the max is 3% unless you change positions

Seattle cold snap continues with temps in the teens, high of 25 ( www.seattletimes.com )

Temperatures fell to 14 degrees overnight in Seattle, ushering in a bleak and biting chill the city hasn’t seen for over a decade. Temperatures are unlikely to surpass a high of 25 degrees Saturday as a blanket of clouds settles over the city....

As a recent transplant from Georgia I am all sort of flummoxed right now

cmbabul ,

pfSense either virtualized or on almost any cheap mini pc with more than one nic

cmbabul ,

Naw not stupid but thats kinda your call, I just put my old WiFi router in Access Point mode and hooked it up to the machine I’m using and it works great. I’m sure it’s possible to use a pcs internal radio to broadcast but I’ve never researched that myself

cmbabul ,

So I said “old” but it’s still relatively new and broadcasts on boy 2.4 and 5 ghz

cmbabul ,

I actually missed that you mentioned the nighthawk in your post somehow, I bought one in 2020 so I wouldn’t have to rent Comcast’s but that’s what I’m currently using. If you have your own wireless router that broadcasts on the frequencies you need with the SSIDs that are already in your various devices you can almost certainly just throw that into AP mode and then just connect it to sense once it’s configured and not miss a beat.

I’d also recommend getting your own modem(arris surfboard s33 is my recommendation) if your ISP allows it

cmbabul ,

You ain’t wrong, it’s not hard and I’ve done it many times, but as a native to Atlanta I do have to call out that most folks are averse to MARTA because as a general rule it sucks.

cmbabul ,

Many years ago comedian Lewis Black called MARTA “the subway to nowhere” and I’ve never heard a more apt description

cmbabul ,

Revisiting and I thought I’d expound, having now lived in a city with somewhat reliable busses it’s insane how bad the bus system is in Atlanta

cmbabul ,

He gets irritated when we get him anything other than a belt, a wallet, or house shoes. And I gave him house shoes last year so I guess a belt. Which I’m broke so I’m not mad about it

cmbabul , (edited )

I’m from Atlanta currently in the PNW, and I meet folks every now and then that say they want to move to Texas or Florida or wherever because of the property prices and what not. I keep telling them the culture is just not the same. Not bad or good just that many things they appreciates and expect about where they live will not be there. I myself had to get used to the big differences in the food scenes, shopping, no A/C in most residential buildings, and how to meet people and make friends.

I’m happy with my choice overall but many folks just don’t do their due diligence when relocating.

Didn’t the Georgia Secretary of State receive a fentanyl envelope too? The same SoS that Trump had his perfect phone call with?

cmbabul ,

I figure it’s a combination of three things; the level of aerodynamic engineering the industry has achieved, lowest common denominator design to appeal to the largest possible group, and a demand for storage space.

cmbabul ,

Straight up don’t fucking do it, smart tvs are all trash that’s spies on you. Get an equally sized industrial monitor for about the same price and throw a Roku on it

If you are determined go Samsung, Tizen sucks but WebOs is the worst OS I’ve ever experienced

cmbabul ,

For sure, but if someone is considering a smartTV I’m presuming they are looking for simplicity. And while Roku does probably spy at least their shit works, I want to break my LG WebOS tv on a daily basis, I’ll never buy another smartTV

Edit: also unless something has changed you can’t flash anything onto Samsung or LG tvs if that’s what you meant. If I’m wrong tell me and I’ll have a project to complete today

cmbabul ,

I figured I was too late to that game on like 2017. I was really fucking wrong

cmbabul ,

I keep telling people, Trump pissed off the old money in Georgia by putting the biggest possible spotlight on the states election systems which are corrupt as all hell. And they are a spiteful group of fuckers that really hate when someone gets “uppity”. Fuck all of them too but they are not the type of people you want to fuck over and that’s how they see that “perfect phone call”

cmbabul ,

I can try… but I’m a bit hammered right now, if you’ll be patient I can give it a better shot tomorrow

cmbabul ,

Cheers friend!

cmbabul ,

Alright so to start off my credentials are that I was born and lived in Georgia for nearly 40 years before wising up and getting the hell out despite loving Atlanta and the surrounding area very much

The whole state is corrupt as shit, I think we all remember how the current governor Brian Kemp was allowed to oversee his own election results against Stacy Abrams in 2018. Well that shit is the tip of the iceberg in GA, the state makes Chicago and Louisiana look on the up and up by comparison, but the people who are corrupt and in control in Georgia(see Augusta) are much shrewder than other corrupt state and local governments. They like things to appear “proper” even if they aren’t, these are the people that own Augusta National and put on the Masters. Anything that might threaten that “propriety” is seen and treated as an existential threat.

I’m certain that all of these old rich racist fucks voted for Trump in 2020 and wish he had won because that gave them more leeway to be assholes and get even more rich. But he stepped out of line with that phone call and put himself above the grift. Old money in the south plays the long game, they know they won’t win every battle, and if they thought Trump winning was imperative to their goals he would have gotten the votes he asked for without him asking. But since he did ask/threaten they’re going to nail him to the wall

All that text to say Trump forgot his place to the bunch of old, petty, rich assholes and they don’t take kindly to that kind of thing.

cmbabul ,

Thanks glad I could illuminate it for you

And yeah I want to be very clear that these are not our friends, I’m glad Trump pissed in their cornflakes because they are effective at extracting retribution but ultimately they need to go too

cmbabul ,

Hey now, Ben Shapiro, Jordan Balthazar Peterson, and other ‘manosphere’ ghouls deserve blame too

cmbabul ,

Yeah I’m happy for the folks that benefit, and I ain’t complaining that Ive been more fortunate than them financially, but realistically salaried positions have gone from being desirable because it was consistent and favorable to those who can finish their duties in under 40 hours to a way for companies to squeeze more work out of people without having to compensate them for work done in excess of those 40 hours.

cmbabul ,

I’ve worked in salaried positions that were truly great and I had weeks where I barely put in 20 hours, but more recently I’ve seen a trend in ensuring that 40 hours of work is getting done. Both at jobs I’ve worked and from things I’ve heard from friends at other employers. Glad you have a good team and position though

cmbabul ,

This is just more anecdotal evidence but prior to my current job, my prior two roles were in technical consulting, which when I started was an incredible position for both work/life and to a lesser extent compensation. I left the first one because they were starting to tighten things and demanded a return to office(which we didn’t do before the pandemic) and excessively documented timesheets, down to quarter hours. The next was straight up exploitative. The age of a chill tech job is drawing to a close because the tropes have become known to management

cmbabul ,

That’s really close to how my role used to be, glad to know there still roles out there, I’ll have to get to searching again. Happy for you!

cmbabul ,

The upper classes are the boogeyman that made everyones life suck to varying degrees using the made up subdivisions they’ve designed to keep themselves in control. Blame those at the very top of the hierarchy, you may be higher up on it than others in more marginalized groups but unless you’re worth billions you still aint close to the top
