NASA will pay SpaceX nearly $1 billion to deorbit the International Space Station

The space agency did consider alternatives to splashing the station.

Proton is taking its privacy-first apps to a nonprofit foundation model

Because of Swiss laws, there are no shareholders, and only one mission.

@arstechnica this seems good. I've been using proton for about a year now. Still get so much shit at Google and a lot of commerce sites block proton mail because it has alias options but I'm happy with it.

It's your turn to be a political strategist.

If Trump is found guilty, should Biden emphasize the guilty verdict or focus on abortion and democracy instead?

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@rbreich if I'm the Dems I flood every highway with billboards talking about the guilty verdict.

And abortion.

And that Trump is an authoritarian dictator like Castro, Pinochet, Chavez, Stalin, Hitler and Mao. It doesn't matter that some of these are from the right and some from the left. They're all authoritarians and he too is an authoritarian.

Effective tax rates before and after the Trump tax law:

Verizon
Before: 21%
After: 8%

Walmart
Before: 31%
After: 17%

AT&T
Before: 13%
After: 3%

Walt Disney
Before: 26%

FedEx

After: 1%

This is what a corporate giveaway looks like.

When I was a mere clerk for the 1st circuit appeals court, I wasn't allowed to have a political bumper sticker for fear of creating even the appearance of bias on the court.

How can Justice Alito be allowed to rule on Jan 6-related matters after flying a pro-insurrection flag?

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@rbreich answer: SCOTUS has no authority above them, save Congress' power of Impeachment. With Republicans consistently appointing people with no integrity or decency, the so called guardrails that guided the court since at least Warren was appointed, failed at that point.

Predictably, I might add.

It's not like SCOTUS had any moment of history outside of the Warren and Marshall Courts where it acted with a shred of integrity or decency.

I know you know I'm just venting.

Trump keeps telling the lie that he's being prosecuted "by Biden."

False.

Four different grand juries, made up of ordinary citizens, voted to indict him after reviewing substantial evidence that he had committed crimes. That's how the criminal justice system works.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@rbreich and of course, President Biden has no jurisdiction or direct authority over the New York State Attorney General's Office nor the local District Attorney's Offices.

Sometimes, I wish Biden could fire the mayor of New York and then sit down with people of New York and help them learn how to stop electing the biggest shitheads in the world as mayor.

The CEO before him got one worth $62 million on his way out the door in 2019.

@rbreich I'd call it corporatism, a form of capitalism that, well, favors corporations and lets them run everything.

It's the system the Nazis and Fascist Italy used.

philip_cardella ,

@rbreich of course the issue is they don't want to be the party of limited government anymore. That was the former Republican party. That party couldn't win so they invited in Christian nationalists. Those people let the power go to their heads and welcomed in fascist thinking and here we are.
