Okay there was a lot that worked for me in that episode. The amazing decision to have Pelia knowing nothing about engineering to being a veteran warp core engineer in 200 years. Going for child Khan and really leaning into the fucked up reality that these children were science experiments kept locked in basements for the first time in the franchise? The reminder that Toronto is actually pretty damn photogenic when it's not shot on a CW budget.
And you know what? Paul Wesley doesn't have Kirks voice, and the script still doesn't quite sound right, but he's got the Kirk delivery really nailed. He doesn't sound like Shatner, but he sounds like Kirk
c/startrek is the "general" community of the instance, yes.
The error message on Jerboa is a known issue - unfortunately, we're going to wait until v.0.18.1 is released, as CAPTCHA is disabled in v.0.18.0, and we're not willing to give that up at this time.
There are three main workarounds that we're aware of for this issue:
When your Jerboa login fails, simply use Android's "back" button to return to the initial screen in the app - you should actually be logged in, and able to engage with the instance, at least in a limited fashion.
There is a fork of Jerboa that's supposed to compatible with instances running v.0.17 - I haven't tested this myself, so use at your own risk.
You can access the instance through a mobile web browser - the mobile web version of Lemmy is actually pretty good, and I preferred it over Jerboa even before the version mismatch became an issue. You can even install the instance as a PWA through Chrome's "..." menu.
I enjoyed it. La’an is very much growing on me, and Pelia has immediately become my favorite character.
Enjoying the episodes that delve deeply into specific characters. Probably one of the best things about older treks that Discovery and Picard didn’t do well.
This is the best episode of modern Trek since Magic to Make…
It hit all the right notes and felt so Star Trek. Don’t get me wrong, I love serialized seasons, but Star Trek is at it’s best when it doesn’t take itself too seriously, while also simultaneously dealing with serious plot points.
While possible, it’s also possible Janeway is just fucking with him and where Chakotay hides his booze is an open secret.
That conversation was in the elevator, and Chakotay had just said he wasn’t going to talk about what the experience was like because of the temporal prime directive.
Coming from someone who has seen all of the older (pre-Discovery) stuff but only a smattering of the newer stuff:
This is such a difficult question because I think TNG and DS9 were peak Star Trek (along with movie IV) and are where I would point newbies, but both series have such off-putting starts. I grew up on TNG, so it was easy to get past the rough edges of the early seasons on my start-to-finish watch. However I hated DS9 when I started watching it, and only powered through because I was on a “watch all of the franchise” mission (this was back in 2015). Having finished it though, DS9 is now my favorite series in the franchise.
I think my recommendation for newbies is a curated list of a handful of TNG’s standout episodes, followed by “if you liked this, start TNG from the beginning,” followed by “if you liked this, watch DS9 but PROMISE ME you’ll watch the first three seasons before giving up, yes I know it’s a lot to ask but trust me,” followed by “if you’re still with me, start from the franchise beginning and watch in air order, although feel free to give up on TOS if it’s not your thing and skip to movies II+.”
I would actively dissuade anyone who hasn’t watched at least 20 seasons of Star Trek (any series) from starting Lower Decks. Even I feel like half the jokes and references go over my head.
