@Nmyownworld

In your view, has the Star Trek franchise simply become capeshit in space?

BrikoX , to RedditMigration in What's your opinion on cross-posting?

I have mixed feelings towards the repost bots. I see no value in pure reposts from Reddit, but I also have no issue with them IF they only post on dedicated instances and mark the account it’s posting from as a bot. Those posts have no engagement. Most people either disable bot posts in settings or block then once they see them. There is nothing wrong with growing communities slowly, but with organic content or only reposting the most interesting stuff.

Wayward , to Star Trek in Looking to share Mlem for IPhone learnings.

It’s been kinda crap for me, regularly forgetting my logins. Mlemmy for iOS has been a bit better.

StillPaisleyCat OP ,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Is Mlemmy different from Mlem?

I was trying Mlem in beta through Test Flight, but it wasn’t very functional yet, despite the nice interface. (I’ve been finding just going through the browser good enough for now.)

Wayward ,

Yessir. They’re trying to go for an Apollo feel I think, and there’s some things that are still missing, I can actually use Mlemmy. Mlem can’t even save my login once it’s unopened for an hour or so.

cadillactica , to Literature in What are you reading? (July 2023)

The Fifth Season, it’s an epic fantasy novel by N.K. Jemisin. I originally started it about a month ago but I’ve just been reading it in fits and starts, though it’s not particularly long. The story takes place in a world which gets wiped by a global catastrophe every couple of centuries. Certain people called orogenes have the ability to manipulate the earth in order to bring about or quell earthquakes. They’ve also got some other interesting abilities. Naturally, the regular people, who are the majority called Stills, are fearful of orogenes and they’ve formed society such that they can harness but most importantly control orogenes. Bit of a slow start, but since I’ve made it halfway through, it’s been very engaging.

yeanomaybe ,

I was most surprised by how I became emotionally hooked by this novel rather than intellectually (if that makes sense) - I wasn’t as into the world but more the people, which is rare for me in a sci fi/fantasy novel. What a heartbreaker.

cadillactica ,

I feel the same way. There’s a lot of interesting relationships that are made complicated by who has control and how they wield it.

Iirc, you got an invite to Eternity Club if you posted something that hit #1 on r/all/top. Most active topic was Selfie Sunday.

Unfortunately, I’m still seeing the same errors when trying to load my very small-sized avatar. Not fixed yet for me.

Best tool is the one that gets the job done (ideally while keeping all your fingers).

I agree. But yes. Some people really seem to despise “inferior” brands.

Same for Harbor Freight. Great tools for light duty use, but if you’re doing big jobs frequently, spring for something better.

I’ve had a HF drill since 2005 and it only recently died. It can probably be fixed since it seems the trigger just wore out, but I got 18 years of use from it for like $15.

towerful ,

There are 2 schools of thought, and both are situationally relevant.

Buy the 2nd last tool you will ever need.
IE, buy light duty. If it breaks and you’ve been using it a lot, you will likely know what features you want, how much to spend etc on the replacement. At which point you buy a more suitable tool.

Buy once, cry once.
If you are spending $200 on a tool, and the $300 is better, maybe just buy the $300 one.
Certainly more applicable to when you already use similar tools, and you need another.

Do you have a PRV? Is the sound worse at the PRV?

The hot water flow making the sound go away isn’t explained by a bad PRV but everything else could be.

h0rnman OP ,

PRV? Not sure what that is or where i would find it

nowwhatnapster ,

Pressure reducing valve. Typically found directly after the water meter to reduce high municipal water pressure to reasonable residential water pressures.

Since Relay is still working right now I check back once or twice a day.

After being on Kbin for the last couple weeks, it's amazing to me how shitty and toxic Reddit feels in comparison now. I'm basically only going there to check a couple niche subs, then bounce.

I'm also only commenting to suggest people check out Lemmy/Kbin, haha.

I'm also only commenting to suggest people check out Lemmy/Kbin, haha.

And therefore I presume getting down-voted. It's not enough that you are offering a helpful alternative, they want to not only be happy miserable in their chosen place, but for all other places to not be allowed to exist either. :-(

zalack ,
@zalack@kbin.social avatar

Maybe it's because I ejected the default subs out of my list a long time ago, but I haven't gotten downvotes for it at all

BEEKAYRANDEE , to sysadmin in Calling all /r/sysadmin reddit refugees!

One thing I'm wondering about is how people moving from Reddit to one of these Fediverse sites are going to end up finding their "home". Like, would we need some sort of sharing bot to work between here, [email protected], [email protected], etc. or are we going to end up in a situation where they're all fragmented from one another?

jmd_akbar ,

I found this community via a 2-pronged approach. First, direct search on kbin, and then i used sub.rehab to verify that i've got the correct "community" (?)
