Greg Abbott can go fuck himself

Etterra , to Texas in Gov. Greg Abbott Wants to 'End' Trans Teachers Expressing Their Gender in Texas

Well must Americans want to end Greg Abbott expressing anything at all, but we can't all have what we want.

Telorand , to Texas in Gov. Greg Abbott Wants to 'End' Trans Teachers Expressing Their Gender in Texas

Yep, keep it up. Surely, beating the drum of the culture war won't backfire at the polls. Ask Ron DeSantis for ideas.

/s

Seriously though, this will fail on appeal via the first amendment, even if they manage to pass something. "Freedom of expression" is a clearly established as synonymous with " freedom of speech," and as Conservative as SCOTUS is, they haven't signaled they're willing to completely overturn the first amendment for the idiotic culture war (since that harms their own people).

Not sure what mileage he's expecting to get out of this; does he have some delusion that he has a shot at the presidency next time around?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Because of a Supreme Court decision, Bostock v. Clayton County, LGBTQ individuals are a protected class under federal law that bars discrimination in the workplace.

Earlier this month, a federal judge temporarily blocked a Florida law that prevented a transgender teacher from using pronouns that do not align with their sex assigned at birth.

“This time,” U.S. District Judge Mark Walker wrote in his decision to temporarily block the law, “the State of Florida declares that it has the absolute authority to redefine your identity if you choose to teach in a public school.

Monacelli noted that after Abbott’s remarks, a number of conservative politicians in Texas came out in support of a ban on teachers dressing in ways that do not line up with their gender assigned at birth.

In June of last year, he signed legislation that banned trans youth from accessing transition-related care such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers.

LGBTQ rights groups, including PFLAG and the American Civil Liberties Union, have filed lawsuits challenging the Texas law.

Nice

Telorand , to Texas in Ted Cruz Is Getting Nervous He's Going to Lose His Senate Seat

The odds are certainly some of the best we can hope for:

  • Higher political engagement in general from Millennials and Gen Z than in the past.
  • It’s a general election, so higher voter turnout in general.
  • Trump has been banging the drum of fascism (or at least authoritarianism), so people will turn out just to vote against him.
  • Republicans have been glibly attacking women’s reproductive rights and medical procedures like IVF. Both issues will increase turnout.
  • They showed their ass when they acquitted Paxton.
  • He’s not running against someone like Beto. He’s running against a former football player, and if there’s one thing Texans love, it’s football. Cruz is already unpopular by virtue of being himself.
  • All those Conservative folks moving from California to Texas are moving to Florida, now.

This was always mildly funny. Conservatives like to talk about democrats importing voters to turn the state blue, but from my point of view it was out of state republicans moving in keeping it red.

I fear that he's going to under-perform his party, but still squick out a win. People dislike him almost universally, but the GOP folks who don't respect him can still count on his vote and they know that he will kiss the ring to keep his job.

Also, I've decided "squick" is probably a good verb to use for most things that Ted Cruz does.

Telorand ,

Let’s make sure people have a plan in place so they can get out there and vote. He can squick the fuck off.

stoly ,

All those Conservative folks moving from California to Texas are moving to Florida, now.

Literally family of mine is doing this right now. It’s weird.

scytale ,

I hope so. Texas is somewhat purple and still has a chance of turning eventually, but Florida is a lost cause.

For those that don’t know (I didn’t) iHeartMedia is the company formally known as Clear Channel.

I guess Clear Channel sullied their name so badly they had to rebrand.

elbarto777 ,

What did Clear Channel do?

ccunning ,

They were kind of the Sinclair Media of the mid-1990s - 2010s

Basically after the 1996 Telcom Act lifted restriction, they started consolidating and monopolizing terrestrial radio markets and enshitifying the airwaves. They brought back payola and started destroying local and regional diversity and pushing homogenous playlists and centralized DJs.

Looks like the rebrand happened a decade ago

elbarto777 ,

Interesting. I knew the enshitifying consolidation happened, but I learned it with the new name, not the old one.

some_guy , to Texas in Ted Cruz Is Getting Nervous He's Going to Lose His Senate Seat

“The Democrats are coming after me, they are gonna spend more than $100 million this year, George Soros is already spending millions of dollars in the state of Texas,” Cruz told Sean Hannity.

Oh no, Soros is like Sauron from LotR!

Anyway, sounds like I’ll need to cut iHeartMedia from my supported podcasts if they turn up in an audit (I support a lot of shows, so I’ll have to check). Too bad there isn’t a market for podcast piracy.

Fuck Cruz.

elbarto777 ,

What do you mean, podcast piracy?

Do you pay for your podcasts?

I haven’t paid anything for mine…

some_guy ,

Yes, I subscribe to get bonus episodes for some and to avoid ads for others. For some, I don’t pay and I skip over the ads. Some of my favorite content is the extra eps that I get from private feeds.

elbarto777 ,

Understood. Interesting.

The best part is from my understanding their new law allows cops to arrest anyone out walking their dog without ID as a possible ‘illegal’ until their family or the cops can break into their houses, shoot the dog, and then maybe find their birth certificate or passport.

That’s right, the same people who freaked out about private companies checking vaccines cards during a pandemic are now raving about how the courts are blocking them from arresting anyone who leaves their house without government permission. But of course, the leopards will know to only eat the brown peoples faces.

May I present the party of ‘small government’ ladies, gentlemen, and others, the party of small government.

TigrisMorte ,

Don't worry, they'll only use it against brown people so no problem, right? /s

Moira_Mayhem ,

Can we please stop pretending republicunt hypocrisy is new or funny?

sonori ,
@sonori@beehaw.org avatar

No. That the Republicans are just populist with no consistent moral or policy positions is too important to just leave unsaid.

Moira_Mayhem ,

Ok I have to admit you are right on that fact. Just I wish the articles weren’t written as if this was some recent development in an otherwise moral party with reasonable differences in perspective that was willing to work on common ground.

Because republicunts are not that at all and the framing makes it seem like ‘well they used to be up until this shocking moment’, and we get those moments 2 or 3 times a month these days…
