So like what does it take for people to revolt? are they just going to stand idly by while their fellows actually die, waiting for their own turn to stroke out from overworking and dehydration?

yata ,

As long as it owns the libs, a lot of Americans, and in particular Texans, will very happily do that.

    That’s actually a common misconception. Protect and serve was never the police motto, it was a slogan written on the side of los angeles police cruisers back in black-and-white television days. People picked it up through shows like Adam-12 and Dragnet. LAPD (no PD in america that I know of, actually) no longer write that slogan on any of their items, specifically to avoid the impression that they might be supposed to protect and serve if they don’t want to.

    Edit: I’m told that some unspecified police departments do keep this “motto” on their vehicles, despite not being beholden to or, generally speaking, acting upon it.

    senseamidmadness ,

    Nope, saw it on black-and-white in my own town just two days ago. It was in quotes. “To Protect And Serve”

    senseamidmadness ,

    Police departments aren’t that smart. They are blatantly and openly willing to lie to the public on a daily basis. Why would they care about how that “slogan” makes them look when they’re willing to publicly shelter murderers and kill over a thousand citizens a year?

    The freedom to criticize our leadership is cherished. This professor should never have been suspended for legitimate and legally protected behavior. I hope she seeks legal remediation for this.

    Powderhorn Mod , to U.S. News in A Texas university removed its unique public billboards after students used them to share thoughts on Gaza war
    @Powderhorn@beehaw.org avatar

    It’s clear the Texas Tribune has picked a side from inserting an adjective into “The Oct. 7 terrorist attack, and ensuing assault on Gaza …” I have very little remaining faith in U.S. media, corporate or otherwise. If you need a narrative with a clearly defined “good” and “bad” side, you probably aren’t going to get much out of a Gaza story in the first place.

    Imagine! “Extended political discourse” on a university campus. Can’t have that!

    MJBrune ,

    If you are surprised that the Texas tribune is biased then I have disappointing news for you for every outlet that ends in tribune.

    Powderhorn Mod ,
    @Powderhorn@beehaw.org avatar

    Surprised overall? Of course not. Surprised they’d choose this overt demonstration thereof? Absolutely.

    MJBrune ,

    They are literally playing to their audience though. This is what any tribune does. It’s in the name tribune.

    Powderhorn Mod ,
    @Powderhorn@beehaw.org avatar

    You do realize not all Tribunes worldwide are part of Tribune, right? You’re doubling down here, and that makes me wonder.

    MJBrune ,

    One of the definitions of Tribune: an official in ancient Rome chosen by the plebeians to protect their interests.

    It’s literally in the name. It has nothing to do with what Tribune Publishing is. It’s a definition of the English language.

    has picked a side from inserting an adjective into “The Oct. 7 terrorist attack, and ensuing assault on Gaza …”

    How is that “picking a side”? It’s possibly the mildest neutral way of writing about what happened, as opposed to something like “The Oct 7. freedom fighter operation, and ensuing pacification of Gaza”, or similar.
