most public transport worldwide isn't trains, it's buses

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

pretty sure most trains are powered by either overhead wires or third rails? considering that urban rail systems are always electrified and those have A LOT of trains.

you really ought to be stopping a few more times, i don't understand how so many people are just completely fine with driving for 3 hours nonstop

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

okay? i'm talking about the world though, so typical for people to just assume america is all that matters lmao

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i do feel like they could just skip the fucking cost for it, i get that they need to cover the food and tshirt and stuff, but also they are a massive corporation that is getting to propagandize to their future workers, so like maybe just eat that cost so it doesn't leave a dystopian aftertaste?

Put a different way: if a poor family is able to get their kid into this so the kid gets a free meal and a better shot at landing a job, that's probably the closest they can get to doing something wholesome.

motorcycles should 100% be in the zone of practicality, especially with modern sleek electric ones.

skateboards should be the bridge between practical and recreational, provided you have sensible infrastructure and short distances they have distinct benefits.

skis and sleds just need snow to make sense

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

sure but that applies to everything, if you want to be safe then the only time you should ever be on a road is inside a bus.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it annoys me to no end how motorcycles and mopeds are viewed as dangerous, when every single time you hear about people being hurt on them it's because they're fucking idiots who tried to do a backflip infront of a semitruck

  1. enjoy the freedom of not needing an employment to live, and presumably free public transport letting you go anywhere at any time without needing to think about access to fuel or parking or how to feed and house yourself while you travel

here in sweden most cities have some amount of municipal housing, where you can get a family-sized apartment for like $1200 equivalent, or a studio apartment for $300-400

it's almost like socialism works, and it works so fucking well that they have to legally restrict the municipal housing from being more than like 17% of the housing supply lest it nuke all private landlords from orbit

because you're playing stardew valley on your steam deck

Knights among toner cartridges ( infosec.pub )

(Business people) speaking a language familiar and dear to them. Its portentous nouns and verbs invest ordinary events with high adventure; executives walk among toner cartridges, caparisoned like knights. We should tolerate them - every person of spirit wants to ride a white horse. -William Strunk Jr. (The Elements of Style)

it’s really astounding how many people choose to believe that poor people and minorities are the REAL problem, despite the fact that rich people are consistently and quite obviously being cartoonishly evil

surely no one would just pick a mushroom, hold it in front of their cat, snap a pic, and pretend the cat gave it to them?

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i maintain that cooperation is just objectively the best strategy on large scales, to the point that life on earth is fundamentally cooperative.

Like, imagine if species couldn’t eat each other, if mushrooms didn’t exist to break things down into digestible nutrients, we would have a fraction of the biomass and diversity we do now and life would be extremely vulnerable.

Cooperation inherently leads to more efficient resource utilization as species can specialize and resources are continuously recycled.

it’s pretty shit sarcasm when it’s just what a lot of strange people would unironically say

Why do trees stems grow new "parts" inside and not outside i.e. why is the oldest part of the stem the innermost "ring" and not the outermost?

Wouldn’t grow something from the inside require a very strong force to “move” the already present one? Instead growing from the last “layer” towards the outside would require a lot less force, but perhaps a lot more matter....

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

OP phrased it weirdly but what they mean is that trees have all growth happen at the surface, not in the middle.

which is actually the opposite of how our skin grows, skin cells grow at the bottom of the skin and are pushed upwards by the new growth and mature as they go, until they reach the surface and die so that they can protect us and easily be shed to make space for new cells.

which is why you’ll see hollow trees being perfectly happy and healthy, whereas a human with an empty space underneath their skin is going to be uncomfortable at best.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

well i’d say that trees grow in both ways: the stem grows on the outside because it’s acting more like our bones, but the bark acts like our skin and indeed grows in the same way, new matter being created at the base and pushed outwards, hence why a lot of bark has tons of cracks in them from the stretching.

except we have vegan meats made from various vegetable proteins that are basically equivalent at this point, and they most certainly don’t have the same proteins as meat.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

been eating meat my whole life and vegan nuggets are impossible to tell apart, and vegan ground meat is sufficiently close that you wouldn’t notice being served it in a sauce instead of real meat.
