These are the out-of-state license classes included in the list:

  • Connecticut licenses with the disclaimer "Not For Federal Identification."

  • Delaware licenses that say "Driving Privilege Only" and "Not Valid for Identification."

  • Hawaii licenses that read "Limited Purpose Driver's License," "Limited Purpose Instruction Permit," "Limited Purpose Provisional Driver's License," and "Not Valid for use for official Federal purposes."

  • Rhode Island licenses with the disclaimers "Not for Federal Identification," "Driver Privilege Card," and "Driver Privilege Permit."

  • Vermont licenses that say "Not for REAL ID Purposes Driver’s Privilege Card," "Not for REAL ID Purposes Junior Driver’s Privilege Card," and "Not for REAL ID Purposes Learner’s Privilege Card."

So what's happening is that drivers' licenses which clearly say they're not recognized as ID won't be recognized as an ID? I'm not seeing an issue, then.

user36481 ,

REAL ID is a federal requirement to use a driver's license as a form of ID to fly within the US without a passport. They are still legally acceptable forms of ID for all other purposes. They are legal drivers licenses. You still have to prove your identity to acquire them.

EnglishMobster ,
@EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

You don't need an ID to drive. You need a driver's license. And these licenses now suddenly don't count in DeSantisWorld.

Driving without an ID is not a crime. Driving without a license is. I can see the distinction being lost when you disagree with the person politically though.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

The bill specifically states forms of identification, not licenses to drive. I'm not sure identification would fit the definition of full faith and credit, since every state gets to decide what identification means and is required for.

Driver's licenses are a different story. Those would be respected if valid in another state.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

Not saying it's right, but it's probably legal.

Col3814444 OP , in ‘He Kicked Me in My Balls.’ Fight at Michigan GOP Meeting Turns Physical: Report

Mark DeYoung, who chairs the Clare County Republican Party, said he heard Chapman’s attempt to enter the room and opened the door after seeing someone flip him the bird through a window. “He kicked me in my balls as soon as I opened the door,” DeYoung said of Chapman, speaking to The Detroit News by phone from the emergency room.

Both parties are not the same.

Grumps ,

You can smell the testosterone supplements from this description alone. The door was locked and everything was under control... But DeYoung couldn't let a middle finger stand so he opened the door. AmberPrince , in ‘This is a death sentence for me’: Florida Republican women say they will switch parties after DeSantis approves alimony law
@AmberPrince@kbin.social avatar

So I don't really know how to feel about this.

Permanent alimony seems silly to me. If I'm married for 10 years and get a divorce, why should I have to pay alimony for the next 40+ years?

I'm not opposed to alimony though. My in-laws just got divorced. They were married for like 20 years and during that time my father in law owned a business and wanted his wife to stay at home and take care of the house, kids etc. Now that they are divorced she has no career or equity and is in her 50s so starting one from nothing is a huge challenge. So there are fringe cases out there where it makes sense.

I don't know. I don't like DeSantis so as a reaction I want to be like "this is a dumb thing to do" but I just don't know.

LeafyPasserine ,
@LeafyPasserine@kbin.social avatar

According to the article, permanent alimony is granted only if the receiver agrees to give up other assets in exchange. So it's more of a trade.

JasSmith ,

So in effect this change means that trade will no longer be possible. At least not to the same degree. Everyone splits everything equitably and goes their separate way, plus some alimony but not lifetime. Seems reasonable to me.

AngrilyEatingMuffins ,

At what point are you imagining this 60 year old woman with no work experience is going to be able to support herself?

JasSmith ,

Well at 60, she and her husband have been saving for their retirement for 40 years already, so she’ll use that to retire early. Plus she’ll have at least half of all other assets too. Probably more if she’s disabled as in your example and unable to work at all.

Or do you believe that the husband should be unable to retire to find her lifestyle in perpetuity?

Guadin ,
@Guadin@k.fe.derate.me avatar

Wow, than the receiving party must had one hell of a squeeze on the giving party. If you are willing to pay for the rest of your life for some asset...

    Let’s listen. [Begin Videotape]

    STEVE BANNON: And what Trump’s going to do is declare victory, right? He’s going to declare victory, but that doesn’t mean he’s a winner. He’s just gonna say he’s a winner. The Democrats — more of our people vote early that count. Theirs vote in mail. And so they’re going to have a natural disadvantage and Trump’s going to take advantage — that’s our strategy.

    He’s gonna declare himself a winner. So when you wake up Wednesday morning, it’s going to be a firestorm. Also — also if Trump is — if Trump is losing by 10 or 11:00 at night, it’s going to be even crazier. Because he’s gonna sit right there and say they stole it. If Biden’s wining, Trump is going to do some crazy shit.

    dickbutler , in Why is the Federal Reserver trying to drive down wages?

    If you want inflation to stop just put extra tax on companies that have increased consumer prices in last 12 months. In 12 months you see that inflation under control again.

    Of course this is never going to happen but we all know the reason for inflation.

    eek2121 ,

    Just need to make corporate taxes similar to personal ones, but as a percentage basis. Did you have a 40% profit? Okay, you pay 37% in taxes on money earned above that. 35% profit? 33% tax.

    Stock buybacks should be considered profit for tax purposes.

    If an employee gets paid more than 50% in stock/stock options and the company has more than 10 million in revenue per year, the company should pay taxes on that as well.

    If we did that and closed a few other loopholes, we’d probably see companies investing more into the business and prices would also not rise quickly.

    HeartyBeast ,
    @HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

    That sounds like it would be really difficult to track and implement in practice though. Companies would just bring in very slightly different models with new names, or do a bit of shrinkflation. Tracking like-for-like equivalents would be a nightmare and everything would get tied up in the courts.

    Unhappily_Coerced OP ,

    Black Lives Matter, too. Who could be against this?

    All lives should be treated as equals. "Social equity" is not equality. Since when is charity dignifying for the recipient?

    Ben Shapiro has terrible opinions about minorities and the LGBT

    Shapiro has stated multiple times that he would rather a child have two gay parents over being an orphan. I won't deny that some of his takes are a bit on the theocratic side. But he isn't theocratic, he recognizes that while his religious beliefs do influence his perspectives, not everyone should be coerced to live the way which he chooses to live.

    He is not a good person

    Clearly, in an echo chamber of leftys and libs, my opinion on Shapiro will not be recognized as the general consensus. However, it's best to keep a perspective that is open minded when listening to opinions with which you might disagree, instead of just attempting to nullify everything that is said simply because you dislike a particular person.

    And he is not quick witted.

    It is quite clear that many people recognize him as a well spoken and worthy debate opponent. While you are certainly entitled to your opinion, that opinion is not commonly recognized, as many people seek debates with him.

    HandsHurtLoL , in DeSantis doubles down on ‘homophobic’ anti-Trump ad: ‘Totally fair game’

    It says a lot to me that when DeSantis was directly asked about a response to the criticism that the ad is homophobic, his reaction is to defend the use of the clips showing Trump making public comments supporting the LGBTQ community. It blows my mind that DeSantis seems to have this complete blind spot and inability to see his own inhumanity.

    I'm reminded of when he was credibly accused by a detainee at Guantanamo Bay of practicing torture on the detainees there. A reporter asked DeSantis to comment on this accusation and DeSantis got immediately hostile and defensive and replied that there's no way the detainee could remember something from 10+ years ago. But DeSantis never said: I don't have that in me to do to another person, surely this accusation isn't true. He said: you can't prove it was me. That is not exactly a denial of cruelty.

    We should hasten to limit this man's influence and access to power.

    Nougat ,

    It blows my mind that DeSantis seems to have this complete blind spot and inability to see his own inhumanity.

    People (usually) don't think, "I know the difference between right and wrong, and I'm going to choose wrong, because I want to be wrong and bad." They think they are doing right and good things for the benefit of all people they judge to also be right and good.

    That blind spot you refer to is what enables people like DeSantis to be so wrong. That blind spot comes first, and creates the wrongness second.

    jscummy ,

    Saying there’s no way he’d remember it 10 years later is absurd too. It’s not a casual encounter that you forget, he was being tortured
