That took me a couple minutes to actually grasp what is where. I like the idea of NYC being in the Himalayas, and I’d love to see that.

Cabrio , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

EYuesday?

tuesday , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

oh hey it me

AI_toothbrush , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

I didnt know gyro could be pronunced in multiple ways

stringbeantheory ,

the greek food gyro is kinda pronounced "yee-ro"

Skua ,

There's gyro as in gyroscope, where the Y vowel sound is like the word "eye", and there's gyro as in the Greek sandwich where the Y vowel is more like the vowel sound in "sea". The latter is often seen only as "gyros" because that's what the actual Greek word is, but because that seems like a plural in English the S is sometimes dropped.

AI_toothbrush ,

Ohh gyros as in the food lol

positiveWHAT , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

The english language is … missing some litterary updates.
A is pronounced [ei]. E is [ii] and I is [ai]. What’s up with that.

e_t_ Admin ,

I started learning Japanese recently. It's made me realizehow sloppy English is with vowel sounds.

dot20 ,

IIUC the problem is that they updated the pronunciation without updating the spelling: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Vowel_Shift

JokeDeity , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

If I’m feeling less lazy and exhausted later I might just have to take voice clips and try to create this variation on pronouncing “Tuesday”.

Masimatutu , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

/ɪɛzdɛɪaɪ/?

palordrolap ,

all my troubles seemed so far away?

tuesday ,

or /ɪɛztɛɪaɪ/ depending on whether you treat the final phoneme of moped as /t/ or /d/ -> [t]

Masimatutu ,

Yep. The ⟨s⟩ in use could also be /s/, I just wrote what first came to mind.

Masimatutu ,

And ⟨e⟩ in record /ɪ/, etc. etc.

brygphilomena , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

I made an antiphonetic alphabet poster a few years ago to hang at my desk.

It has things like G as in Gnu. Y as in You.

Masimatutu ,

In all fairness, the Y in “you” is totally pronounced.

Cabrio ,

As is the Y in U.

funnystuff97 , in XKCD #2819: Pronunciation

“My name is Perry, not Terry, with a ‘P’ as in ‘Pterodactyl’.”

Ryan213 ,
@Ryan213@lemmy.world avatar

LOL I forgot where that’s from!

tuesday ,

“Thompson, with a ‘P’, as in psychology”

Psaldorn ,
@Psaldorn@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah… silent Ps are weird 😅

funnystuff97 ,

Whatever do you mean, puh-saldorn?

sanguinepar ,

Love to watch the Interior eclipse from the lunar donut

Also, cuboid can be observed from Minecraft’s moon

Jackcooper , in XKCD #2816: Types of Solar Eclipse

Can anyone give me a number 9

Agamemnon ,
@Agamemnon@lemmy.world avatar

🫂

Bilbo ,

A hug from Agamemnon! Probably ok. No Trojans hidden anywhere within the hug?

Agamemnon ,
@Agamemnon@lemmy.world avatar

Nope, just regular Achean soldiers hiding here, please ignore.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar
apprehensively_human ,

Number 8. Belch Number 8. Belch Number 8. Belch

Untitled_Pribor ,

I'll have two number 9's, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45's, one with cheese, and a large soda.

HellAwaits , in xkcd #743: Infrastructures

Hot take: while I do appreciate and use FOSS (I’m on Linux), that doesn’t make the people who talk about it 24/7 non-stop any less annoying.

lapingvino ,

Hot take: people being annoying doesn’t make them less right about things and if you disregard the warnings you still only have yourself to blame.

themeatbridge ,

Hotter take: Dismissing a warning because it’s annoying is a tacit admission that they are right and you just don’t give a shit. People are lazy creatures. We have to make fire alarms the most obnoxious and loud sound in the world because otherwise people wouldn’t leave the flaming building.

HonoraryMancunian , in xkcd #743: Infrastructures

TIL the xkcd main character(s?) is (are?) called Cueball

Jakylla OP ,
@Jakylla@sh.itjust.works avatar

Cueball is the main character; others have their own names; for example Megan (appearing a lot as the main Feminine character)

More recurring characters are listed on this page: www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Characters

It’s unofficial, but yeah. People call him that.
