One of the richest men in the 1920s was Andrew Mellon — an early prophet of trickle-down economics.

Yesterday we learned that his grandson, Timothy Mellon, gave a Trump super PAC one of the largest political donations ever.

This is how dynastic wealth works.

Wealth tax now.

How did the Supreme Court get this far out of control? | The Coffee Klatch | June 15, 2024 https://robertreich.substack.com/p/how-did-the-supreme-court-get-this?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Gee, what could go wrong when you have a system where politicans appoint justices? Also why were their no consequences when Merrick Garland was denied a hearing. The Senate shirked its duties.

Let's face it. Those "checks and balances" that we learned about in school don't actually exist in reality.

50 billionaire families have already poured $600M+ into this year's elections — mostly in support of Trump.

That's only 0.6% of their total wealth. It essentially costs them nothing to drown our democracy in dark money.

BluesHarp ,

@rbreich
Our political system is rotten to the core. Owned by money. Wouldn't it be nice if we actually tried to be a democracy.

In the years after Trump's tax cuts, S&P 500 corporations spent $2.72 trillion on stock buybacks to enrich wealthy shareholders. That's more than what they spent on investments in plants and technology to boost production and create jobs. So much for trickling down, huh?

BluesHarp ,

@rbreich
Got to keep that myth going. You know, the one about the rich being "job creators"...

20 Republican attorneys general are demanding that the Supreme Court block individual states like California from suing Big Oil for their climate impacts.

Funny how conservatives only believe in "states rights" for certain issues.

All nine Republican senators running for reelection this year just voted against the right to contraception:

John Barrasso
Marsha Blackburn
Kevin Cramer
Ted Cruz
Deb Fischer
Josh Hawley
Pete Ricketts
Rick Scott
Roger Wicker

So much for the party of "freedom."

34 felony convictions
54 pending criminal charges
2 impeachments
2 popular vote losses
$88M owed to E Jean Carroll
$450M owed for civil fraud
$8T added to nat'l debt
2.9M net loss of jobs

Is this what Trump meant when he promised "numbers like we've never seen"?

The info about Trump's alleged affairs that he's accused of conspiring to withhold from voters easily could've swayed the 2016 election.

Remember, the race came down to fewer than 80,000 votes across several swing states, with "family values" voters being key to his victory.

BluesHarp ,

@rbreich
I think you meant to say white rural voters being the key to his "victory". And BTW, he lost to Hillary by 3 million votes. The racist EC gave him the "win"...

Trump asked Big Oil to give him $1 billion for his campaign last month.

He promised lower taxes and to gut environmental regulations in return.

Big Oil CEOs already appear to be taking him up on the offer, inviting Trump to a fundraiser in Houston yesterday.

Be warned.

Just remember...

The corrupt Supreme Court told us that oil companies are actually people...

The Appeal to Heaven flag isn't just tied to Jan 6.

It's a Christian nationalist symbol.

Christian nationalists believe that the law of the land is not the Constitution, but instead the law of God as they interpret it.

Do you see the problem with Alito flying this flag?

The system is broken. The Supreme Court is a joke. They need an actual code of ethics, but they are not ethical at all...

Moved into a new apartment. Then saw the roaches. Worthless pest contol guy sprayed and then I started treating the place. All entry points got diatomaceous earth. Three kinds of professional strength bait. Still saw a few. Finally pulled out the fridge and oven and found all of the leftover food and pet food under there. Removed that and the problem went away.

Of course, the place should have been clean when I moved in...

Roaches love high protein, high fat pet food. A delicacy.
