I reject the idea that HCW, or any kind of emergency or life support workers for that matter, should be treated like slaves because of the consequences to others if they are treated as fairly as other workers in less urgent lines of work.

I just watched the recent video from Stephen Milo on human life 1 million years ago. He mentions cannibalism evidence across multiple events. That has me thinking about morality in isolated groups and how it might have evolved or could evolve differently....

Curiosity about the evolution of morality is not the same as judgement of that morality.

Also, they are dead and wouldn’t be affected by any judgements today anyways.

Yeah, I’m a millennial who has hated those same things since probably around the same time gen Z started joining the workforce. I bet the only real difference is that gen Z didn’t join the workforce with the illusion that it wasn’t so bad because millennials were already talking about it. And gen X cynicism (which is deserved, not trying to open a front in the “generation war” here) likely planted the seed for millennials to notice it.

Hell, I think it was boomers, if not the silent generation, who first learned the hard way that company loyalty can screw you. If that shit started in the 80s, it would have caught the silent generation.

The whole generational conflict is just another attempt to divide people so they are less likely to unite effectively against the ones who put their profit ahead of everything and everyone else.

Bathroom vent out the side of the house?

So I’m planning out a bathroom remodel and part of that is replacing the vent fan because currently mine is just venting into my attic (no bueno). I know normally bathrooms are vented out through the roof but my bathroom is on an exterior wall so I was wondering if I could just vent it out the side of the house. I’m going to...

I think you’ll have a tough time insulating such a vent so that your bathroom doesn’t end up cold to make up for your attic being less stinky. I don’t see a vent cover that is openable by air pressure being heavy enough to keep the cold from getting in when the fan isn’t on. Though it might help to make the vent push the air downwards so that the cold air would have to creep upwards to get into the bathroom.

I am out of my element for this, however, so this is more advice to look into this angle rather than advising to not do it.

I’ve done a few rounds of selecting resumes and interviewing for jobs at my company and there can be pretty wild differences between candidates. Some people just seem like they never stop. They do well in school, have a bunch of personal projects, work a bunch of jobs, and show an interest and drive in what they do. And I’m mostly looking at students for intern roles or recent grads for entry-level engineering roles. Once you start looking to fill more senior positions, work experience can vary even more wildly.

Part of it is how skilled they are at making a resume or CV and spinning everything they’ve done into the best possible light, or even just remembering/knowing to list all relevant skills. Like a lot of people know excel, but I could only award points to those who listed it on their resume.

Top-tier would be a candidate that matches all of the need to haves and matches most of the like to haves for the position. They’ve got relevant education, sometimes beyond the minimum requirements. They’ve got work experience, sometimes decades of it in leadership roles. They might have papers published in their field. They might be names that you’ve heard of before seeing their resume.

And on the flip side, there’s some awful candidates out there that wouldn’t be selected even if it means leaving the position vacant for now. Like people who learned something well enough to pass their tests (assuming they aren’t just lying outright about having the skill) but can’t answer basic practical questions about it. In one interview (remote), the guy obviously had a friend helping him answer questions (you could hear the whispering, it was pretty funny) but even his friend had no clue.

As an added hint, your smoke alarms might have something indicating which one specifically set them all off. Mine flashes red from that one every 30 seconds or so until it gets reset.

New law is essentially they can now charge possession or public use as a misdemeanor instead of a felony and are targeting people using in public.

I’m no fan of the war on drugs but I will reserve judgment on this for a later time to see how this goes. Leaning towards not having a problem with it.

Hypothetically speaking, what alterations to our biology/genome would need to occur in order for us to be able to safely drink saltwater?

Could we, in theory, use something like CRISPR to give a new baby replacement super-kidneys (or whatever organ it is that makes drinking saltwater be a bad time)? It seems like if we cracked that, we’d be set as a species....

With all of the credit balances being carried, I question the whole “people will just wait instead of spending because it will be more financially advantageous”. I’m also not so sure we really need an economic system that encourages and depends on increased consumption. It would be nice if we had a system that could handle inflation, stagnation, and deflation without imploding on itself.

To me, the biggest factor is that it means debt burdens get lighter over time, assuming you are at least covering interest (if not then interest will outpace inflation, though even the growing debt will be cheaper over time vs what it would be without inflation). Oh, also assuming wages match inflation, which is the other big factor. Your employer can save money over time just by being stingy with raises.

Almost all remote-work news is negative now but was positive in the beginning of the pandemic. Have you noticed this or am I going crazy?

Earlier in the pandemic many news and magazine organizations would proudly write about how working from home always actually can lead to over working and being too “productive”. I am yet to collect some evidence on it but I think we remember a good amount about this....
