Why do people still pretend it takes longer than 20 minutes to get a 50% charge increase?

Nomecks ,

You must live in a red state or the middle of nowhere. It's easy to find chargers everywhere I've been.

Nomecks ,

Most cars will charge to 80% pretty fast. 20%-70% is really fast on most.

Nice! How have wages at these new jobs been stacking up with inflation?

Turn on any upstairs bathroom fans. I find it gives the hot air an escape and allows more cool air to flow upstairs

Wall framing question: stud spacing between openings

I'm framing up a non-load-bearing wall that has two closet doors on it, close together (the king studs for the two openings are 13" apart). Unfortunately, they are aligned such that one of the 16" OC common studs would fall within that gap. In fact, it would only be 1/2" away from the left king stud, so not even anywhere near...

Nomecks ,

Just to throw a wrench into this post: 19.2" is also valid spacing, as indicated by the mark on your (newer) tape measure.

24" spacing will likely require 5/8" drywall to prevent flex.

The major problem here is that the US is owned by the oil industry and they will never allow competitive EVs to be built here. The US could easily match what China's doing, but those subsidies go to oil instead.

No worries, we all have universal translators anyways!

All that money is used to buy American weapons and products. That’s how it works. That money is paid back to American companies.

Go get a diamond hole bit and use a coke bottle full of water with a hole poked in the top to cool and lube it. Use a drill instead of a dremel. You will likely chip the fiberglass (I’m assuming that’s what you think is plastic) if you try with a rotozip bit.

How long is the stem? You can get deep hole saws that may clear it.

Go to networking events. Shake people’s hands and talk to them. Fuck Linkedin and doing anything other than in-person communications.

You can learn on your own time. Books are cheap or free to read and there’s lots of ways to get free hands-on experience. Get off social media and into your local library!

Nomecks ,

No, that sounds like a real pain. Much easier to just have a career where I can advance the way I want. Degrees are pretty portable though.

Nomecks ,

You don’t need a degree for tons of careers, even well paying ones. There’s also tons of people who get a degree and then do the bare minimum of learning afterwards.

Hard Science Futurism: What types of theoretical prefabricated materials would the first stellar generation ship carry to construct an O'Neil cylinder upon arrival?

Assuming we are talking about an era when Sol has a thriving space industry and the Solar system is broadly colonized. Current materials science supports structures up to 8 kilometers in diameter, and if large scale graphene production is possible, up to 100km in diameter, at least according to Isaac Arthor....

There’s no reason that we would expand out at the speed of light in one direction. It’s well within the realm of possibility that we can intercept rogue planets or large asteroids to use as long time habitats. Also we can expand in millions of directions at once at sub-light speed. The journey make take a million years, but we’ll reach a million places at once.

Nomecks , (edited )

Rogue planets come within a few light years of Earth. We could probably have a low speed, multi-generational ship to intercept one in a few hundred years. Once we’re on we’re hopefully good forever. Likely we’ll come close enough to some other interstellar bodies we could populate as we travelled. Exponential growth is bound to take off.

Nomecks ,

I’m guessing if we’ve reached a level of tech to build a functional generational ship we would be patient.

I’ve heard there’s been one or two layoffs. Any salary is better than no American salary.

Is replacing a tub/shower combo DIY'able

Homeowner with a decent amount of handiness but wondering if I’m going to bite off more than I can chew. Is it worth it to try and remove the old shower tub combo and replace it with a new one pretty much by myself? I realize this is a bit of a loaded question and can’t really be answered without knowing my skills but if...

Nomecks , (edited )

The hardest part is lining up the new drain. You may have to trim out some drywall to angle the new tub in place, but overall the process isn’t terrible. You’ll want to wrap, cardboard and do whatever else you can to not scratch the fiberglass while you’re doing the finishing.

It’s impossible to hide the productivity losses from shareholders.
