I don’t care if you think not voting for Biden is voting for facism. Voting for Biden is a vote for right of center neoliberal politicians who takes legal bribes from corporations.

This is the one that's getting me.

As as one of the younger millennials, I also don't really like Biden - in truth, the Democratic Party in the US is more akin to center-right than actual left, but it's waaaaaaay more left than what the other party, the GOP, is. However, the unfortunate and real truth of the US today is that your vote isn't for who you actually want - nowadays, you're voting against what you don't want. A large majority of people (myself included) didn't even want Biden in office, but we wanted Trump in office less than we wanted Biden. Same with Hillary in 2016 - my vote for Hillary wasn't for Hillary (full disclosure, I was a Bernie bro), but rather it was for against Trump. To not vote at all is, for all intents and purposes, helping vote in a person who wants to turn America into a corpofascist dictatorship.

Lol. Give us policy. We will no longer keep voting for the lesser of two evils.

There's a quote that comes to mind from The Witcher series: "Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitrary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all." This was said by Geralt when choosing between having to kill a person he knows and sort-of cares about to placate an angry mob, or helping the dickhead wizard out and killing the village, he chose... neither. And he ended up with the literal worst of both worlds by remaining neutral; the person he knew died, and he killed almost the entirety of the village before getting merc'd by a pitchfork and becoming the Butcher of Blaviken.

I bring this up because it's a perfect example of what not choosing can sometimes be: the greatest evil. Choose what more aligns with your morals and ideas, but recognize that if you do not speak up now for a step towards good because it's not perfect, then you are part of the evil.

As much as I actually hate to say this because it's the reality of the US, the support of Israel genociding the Hamas would've happened regardless of whomever was President. The US has given a ton of support to Israel in the past and we're considered good allies with them, so we would have probably let the genocide slide no matter what.

Do you think Trump wouldn't be for this or something? Or Hillary? Don't go all "gEnOcIdEr JoE" because you think this would've only happened with Biden - this would've happened because we are America.

So better to vote in the guy who will make the US fascist, make it worse for its citizens, and most likely bully and potentially cause more death with its huge army in order to possibly maybe potentially help another country by fucking up?

Even if you’re not a US citizen, that’s some insane mental gymnastics to do in order to somehow be braindead about this genocide being Biden’s fault and try to frame it as if nobody else would or could have let this go as far as it has if they were the US President. And if you are a US citizen living in the US, you do realize you would be living in a Trump-run America? Legitimately, are you okay with actually making another country’s situation maybe slightly better at the expense of your own living conditions??

Why not both?

4-day work week means less stress and more time to rest and be healthy, and a NHS system would also be very good as well.

Gold Bar resident says clerk’s shirt is ‘crossing a line’ as some feel unsafe in grocery store ( www.kiro7.com )

GOLD BAR, Wash. — In Snohomish County, some residents told KIRO 7 they feel unsafe going to their local grocery store. Over the weekend, controversial photos of a cashier at Gold Bar Family Grocer appeared on social media. The photos show a man with a KKK shirt and a loaded holster checking out customers....

It seems weird that a good chunk of Americans don’t seem to know how some of the rights work.

Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are there to basically protect you from the government from going “hey, you can’t say that” or “hey, you can’t believe in that”. It doesn’t absolve people of facing the consequences of their choices, including spewing hate speech if they’re that kind of person. If I said “Hitler was right”, only the government can’t do anything outside of what they can already do with hate speech - but that doesn’t mean I won’t rightfully get a few teeth loose or getting shunned by people around me for saying dumb shit like that.

Strangely, I found this to be evident about some federal laws we take for granted, like minimum wage. People legit think minimum wage is meant for people starting out and not giving out money to them (which makes no sense to me) and argue when they find out the original reason it was even made was so the nuclear family could afford a home, food, and goods and services for themselves and was calculated as how they can do that with one person working a job.

Just want to say this based on your comment OP: just be aware that you’re holding a bag for GME at this point. It’s been almost 3 years and it’s now at… $17, which adjusted for pre-split is $68. It’s very unlikely there’ll ever be a squeeze like the Jan 2021 squeeze ever again.

With that out of the way, CEOs are overpaid for work anybody with half a brain can do. All a CEO does is make decisions, and if they’re good, they’d ask the other executive members to do the actual work and analysis. I’m fairly certain you could have an AI take over their jobs and nothing would change at worst - and it’s more likely that it would actually improve some businesses.

@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

Oh, trust me, I know: I was an Jan ape and saw that shit live when Robinhood turned off the sell button due to “volatility”. Still technically one since I have one share from when it was around $400 DRS’d, but I had to sell the rest of my shares at a loss recently to pay for some bills and debt earlier this year. I also remember when DFV was absolutely shat on in the WSB subreddit for his GME options plays and saw GME at a negative beta quite a few times too, so not a complete stranger to it like you seem to think I am.

If the Jan 2021 squeeze was the “gamma squeeze” and not The Squeeze, I genuinely think it would have happened at some point in the past couple of years - and at this point, I’m starting to think that it did squeeze back then and now it’s just all hype from bagholders and cryptobros.

lmao American democracy was being destroyed the moment Reagan made lobbying a thing. All Trump did was show how fucking broken our system is and how close we can get to being a fascist regime without actually becoming one.

Biden should really be saying “we are destroying American democracy”, because until corporate interests get the fuck out of politics as a whole, American “democracy” will always be a theatre show to convince us we still matter to them.

So if he were a non-white trans CEO, does that suddenly make it ok to do stuff like this?

Being a shitty CEO - nay, a shitty human being - is not mutually exclusive to white people.

Poggervania ,

On paper this sounds good, but in practice I worry if people in power would end up going “lmao let’s increase the retirement age to 100” and then fuck over the citizenry even harder.

I really hope that SNW keeps any more references to the TOS crew to either one-shot episodes or really short cameos, because I genuinely dig it when SNW does it own thing.

It’s cool to explore Spock, Uhura, and Chapel at this point in their careers, and I’m starting to warm up to including Kirk as a semi-regular on the show, but stuff like putting Scotty in an episode where it would’ve been fine if he was replace by a different character is where I can see it going in an unhealthy direction for the show. We, the viewers, don’t need a ton of these call forwards to the TOS crew because we can reasonably say “oh, they’re all in training/serving on different ships right now” and be ok with it - we don’t need to see Chekov, Sulu, Bones, or anybody else from TOS here if it’s gonna be at the expense of the show itself.

Might be off-topic, but I really hate how mainstream media has boiled down politics and news into sports teams. With shit like this headline, it just infuriates me that it’s normal to go “us vs them” for all of the citizens of the same fucking country because the people supporting Team D need to beat Team R, and vice versa. Like, ffs who cares of News Outlet A is having a grand time having their “Super Bowl” on whatever Team R is doing, or if News Outlet B is bashing on whatever random tangent they have going on for Team D?

Yeah, fuck fascism, but fuck whatever mainstream media is trying to do to with this shit, because it’s downplaying politics hard.

It was the same in the 2016 Elections too. Most left-leaning people I talked to did not want Hillary in office, but they wanted Trump not in office more than Hillary - so a vote for Hillary it was.

Honestly, both parties fucking suck, and it sucks even more that our options are literally “right-leaning centrists” and “fascism”.

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. ( gizmodo.com )

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

This is the mindset people should be having. Reddit is gonna be fine regardless of all this, and time will only tell if the Fediverse becomes big enough to be a competitor as a social media platform.

Truthfully, I was on the fence of leaving Reddit because of how much I didn’t like the hivemind there on the majority of subs. I still go on there for my niche and specific communities that aren’t on the Fediverse, but I pretty much just lurk there once every so often instead of actively participate - I instead actively participate on the Fediverse because the community is genuinely waaaaaay better than Reddit’s community ever was, even with the FOSS app gatekeepers here.

I liked the musical episode a lot - but I went in with an expectation of it being silly to a degree and not super serious.

Also, if I had nickel for every sci-fi franchise I had that mentioned a character doing Gilbert and Sullivan, I’d have two nickels - which isn’t a whole lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.

Honestly, it just goes to show that most American citizens don’t really give a shit about politics. So long as the person in charge has the right letter by their name, that’s all that matters to the majority of the US because then they can go “the guy in charge has the same letter I support and like, they can do no wrong because I can’t be wrong!

Man, this had some serious Apocalypse Now kind of vibes. M'benga's heart was touched by the darkness of war, and he couldn't let go of it long after the war was over.

Ending was kind of lame, but I think it's also sort-of in line with Pike as a captain - he's a great diplomat and will always side with his officers, almost to a fault. The ending was one of the times where Pike was himself to a fault. Hopefully Star Fleet either somehow calls it out or throws M'benga under the bus for something.

Are you forgetting you're talking about the series where:

  • Humpback whales were a central plot point in one of the movies
  • Dr. Crusher had a sexual relationship with a ghost
  • Paris and Janeway were mutated into lizards, had sex with each other, and gave birth to babies
  • It's canonical that people need to clean up the bio-filters for holodecks (leave that one to the imagination)
  • Data, a robot, manages to get laid a couple of times
  • Q's method of testing humanity is basically trolling the entire TNG crew every single time he appears
  • SNW had a literal fantasy episode in S1
  • Fucking James Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes was a recurring villain in TNG enough times to show up in Picard

Like... my guy, Stark Trek has always had an element of camp and being a goofy-ass series. It has a lot of thoughtful and contemporary dialogue in a lot of the episodes, yes, but you can't say stuff like the SNWxLD crossover (which, as somebody who has never watched LD and grew up with TNG & DS9, I thought was pretty good) and the next couple of episodes are straying from Star Trek as a whole. Why do you think a lot of Trek fans would consider GalaxyQuest as an honorable Star Trek film?

Haven’t heard of them until this article, but holy moly does the Ballard dude have a hero complex. Between the whole TV show idea, the movie, and that painting of himself, it seems to me that all he cares about is being the “chew bubblegum and kick ass” sort of action hero instead of legitimately trying to help the kids after they are “rescued”.

It sounds like to me this Operation Underground Railroad is really meant for tacticool dudebros and rich people to feel like something they’re not: a hero.

Poggervania ,

I think that’s because those kind of users either want the Fediverse to be Reddit 2.0 instead of its own thing, or they want to be swept up in the drama and feel like they stuck it to Spez. Like it’s weird to see some of the Reddit-specific communities like r/196 be on here and people already making Reddit-tier inside jokes in the Fediverse like the 3 days of pooping.

I would probably wait and see if they release a “Complete Edition” that comes with the new expansion pack and grab it when that’s on sale. The game is fun, but I personally feel like it’s a “one-and-done” sort of game.

New, Conservative Push To Weaken Child Labor Protections Is Gaining Steam ( talkingpointsmemo.com )

A movement to weaken American child labor protections at the state level began in 2022. By June 2023, Arkansas, Iowa, New Jersey and New Hampshire had enacted this kind of legislation, and lawmakers in at least another eight states had introduced similar measures.

It’s because the system is designed in such a way in the US that it conditions us to think like that. The US modern school system is literally based off working in factories, so it’s no surprise that we’ve been conditioned that we need to work to work so much because we’ve been raised in an environment that mimics a work environment for around 14+ years of our lives. It’s kinda fucked up.
