Engywuck , to Literature in How do you usually get new books to read?

I pirate shamelessly. Z-lib is my to-go.

PanaX ,

I just realized, boy is it refreshing to actually talk about sites like z-lib without being censored. Library Genesis and Anna’s Archive are also nifty.

@ellabella@beehaw.org avatar

Book Depository closed the other month, I don’t know if Amazon understood how important it is for people outside US and EU, but the closure really pushed everyone I know to casually switch back to piracy.

This would be awesome if c/Homelab takes off.

rolaulten , to homelab in What Self-Hosted Services Do You Run?

Let’s see.

  • A meda stack (plex/jellyfin, sonarr/radarr, sabnzb, etc).
  • an instance of foundryvtt
  • a local mirror of 5e.tools
  • a “tilt pi” ( Bluetooth hydrometer that supports webhooks/apis)
  • ad (I need to decom this and just use aad)
  • some raspberry pi’s running octoprint.
  • pihole.
  • “general networking stuff” (wire guard, openvpn, network monitoring, etc)
  • nginx as a reverse proxy.

I’m sure I’m missing stuff but that’s a basic list.

Too bad nerd we’re already here and we will cleanse you of your brainworms. Please do not resist.

Wolfric82 , to Politics in Will Lemmy/c/politics remain civil?

I fully appreciate what you’re saying. I will say this though, it’s hard to want to have civil discourse with people who support politicians who actively are trying to strip my rights away and think I shouldn’t exist. I know they themselves might not agree with that aspect of the politician but by continuing to vote for that person they are condoning what the politician is doing.

carlyman OP ,

For sure…and the rhetoric of politicians further that divide with extreme hyperbole. There are a small set people who agree with that…but throughout my domestic (USA) and international travels, they seem to be the fringe. We can’t let the loudest people on the extremes dominate the conversation.

Wolfric82 ,

I’m not sure how fringe they are anymore. Look at the recent Bud Light and Target fiascos. I think the sentiment is larger than people thought

whiny9130 , to Politics in Will Lemmy/c/politics remain civil?

“should we have a 2 cent sales tax to fund schools or a 4 cent one” is politics. “Should trans people exist” is not politics.

Or, rather, don’t argue with someone who doesn’t think you’re a human being. Don’t give them a forum.

Agreed. I don’t like how much our society has given into the Right’s attempt to inherently politicize the existence of minority groups. The TREATMENT of those minority groups by the government is certainly political, but not whether or not they should be allowed to exist.

I’m 100% okay telling people who think that Transgender healthcare should be banned, or that the Jews are the root of societies problems, or that the government should force women to carry pregnancies to term to go have those opinions elsewhere, that they aren’t welcome here. I don’t think it’s somehow “anti free speech” to do that either, they can go scream it on the corner of their street all they want. Just don’t let them do it here, because these aren’t issues that I think should be up for debate. The root of the “debate” around those issues is bigotry (and control over the individual, in the case of abortion) and I don’t see any way to acceptably decouple the bigotry from the “issue” at hand.

Sometimes society decides an idea is too shitty to be expressed publicly without shame and ridicule, and I think that’s fine. I don’t have a problem with private spaces openly banning that kind of speech.

EntropicalVacation , to Literature in What's your favorite book(s) of all time?
@EntropicalVacation@midwest.social avatar

Lord of the Rings just about saved my life in high school. Possession by A.S. Byatt. Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco. Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, though I’ve yet to read the sequels. Atonement by Ian McEwan. Just about anything by Geoff Ryman, Ali Smith, José Saramago, or Sheri Holman.

aquaarmor23 ,

Your taste seems like exactly the sort of thing I’d enjoy, do you have any specific suggestions for someone who absolutely loves Eco’s metafictional novels in particular and metafiction in general? (Aside from Possession, which I’ve never heard of but is going directly on my to-read list)

EntropicalVacation ,

I recently read How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu, which I really liked. It is science fictional, though, but maybe not…maybe more surreal. Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, David Markson. I started Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavić many years ago, got interrupted, and haven’t got back to it, but I definitely need to because it was so intriguing in form.

cduke23 , to Literature in what are your favorite cozy reads?

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. There is a good sequel too called A Prayer for the Crown-Shy that came out last year.

cduke23 ,

I totally just saw the headline and missed your comment that included Becky Chambers. I’m still getting used to Lemmy/Beehaw. Sorry for the reading comprehension fail!

styxbane OP ,

No that’s totally reasonable because A Psalm for the Wild Built is such a great book. I need to read A Prayer for the Crown Shy though. That one I’m waiting for my turn for the copy on Libby

cduke23 ,

I went ahead and bought all of the Long Way series from my local bookstore. I broke down and bought the audio books from Apple for the monk and robot series. I’ll buy them in paperback too when I can get to the bookstore and order them.

Schedar ,

Has there been hints of any new Becky Chambers book that you’ve heard of? The news section of otherscribbles.com doesn’t have anything since nearly a year ago.

When I was deep in the sleep deprived zone of new parenthood, listening & readying to Beckychambers books on audio book was just perfect. I was too fragile to deal with any horribly dark or dense sci-fi books (that so many seem to be) and her books always felt like a nice cup of tea (pretty appropriate considering psalm for the wild-built!)

We are expecting our second and I’d love to have a new Becky chambers book to read or listen to when we restart the new born saga!

Recently finished Hyperion, by Dan Simmons.

I really liked the premise of each character telling their own story. It was a lot of variety and very interesting ideas were explored in different ways in each of them.

drone509 , to Literature in How many of you are using Bookwyrm (federated alternative to Goodreads)?

I’ve been using it mainly as a way of keeping track of what I read. I guess I could use a text file, but it’s nice to be able to see it from my phone or share it.

_ed , to Literature in How many of you are using Bookwyrm (federated alternative to Goodreads)?

Using it. Again to track what I read and motivate for x amount of books per year.

Would be a fan of the discovery section more if I could filter out quotes and notifications about start reading and just have the reviews.

Knoll0114 OP ,

I agree that would be a great feature. Dunno if it’s exclusive to my instance but Discovery also doesn’t have an option for global notifications (it’s just the local one) which is a bit limiting since my instance isn’t that big.

Stimmed , to homelab in Setting up certs for inward facing services

It is always good practice to set up certificates everywhere. I do it for all of my internal services. Each person has a different level of care for how important privacy and security are and some people have abnormal threat profiles.

With that being said, options are usually to run self signed certificates, roll your own certificate authority for your network, or get valid certificates from a service like letsencrypt.

Stimmed , to Personal Finance in Employer stopped matching 401k

Bonuses are discretionary. Stock is questionable, especially if it is not immediately 100 percent vested, 401k tells me they are completely out of money and can’t / won’t source additional funding.

In tech, you should always be looking at the next job, even if you are comfortable where you are. Loving what you do, who you work with, work life balance can all offset certain amounts of money, but knowledge and experience is either always growing or growing stale. I’m guessing at early 30s, you are not in an exec position and changing companies with lead to faster career growth than sticking around for the company to turn around it’s books and promote you.
