Systems and software engineer here. I’m curious how the Lemmy project plans on scaling media uploads. It doesn’t seem feasible to host on an instance server. Even Reddit had a problem with media over the years and some subs to this day enforce offloading media to third party.
Just Postgres or Postgres + Pics? Could you give me the number for Postgres? I’m thinking in hosting my server but I have concerns abot scalability and costs in the future.
It depends on many things like the number of tables, the indexes, etc… but Postgres doesn’t work well above 1 TB. Anyway, it will take several years to reach that point. Someone will figure out a solution.
Thank you for the info. Do you have any link with the specs of your server, bandwidth, cpu/ram usage, statistics…? Anything that could help me to do the maths.
I use Goodreads, it’s got a very annoying interface but I do like being able to discover other people’s lists. What’s the pro to leaving for one of these other platforms?
I left GoodReads because I try to have as little to do with Amazon as possible. I tried StoryGraph but never warmed up to it. I realize LibraryThing has some indirect Amazon ownership, but I found it an acceptable compromise.
I’m currently running OPNsense virtualised in Proxmox. It’s a little confusing if you haven’t run a custom firewall before but the setup was relatively simple and works flawlessly now that I understand it a bit better. The only downside being if you are running it on the same machine as your services and need to restart, your network will go down as well. Ideally I will get another machine just for network services as it sounds like you are doing.
Same here, opnsense on proxmox. I’m very happy with it. Snapshots mean I don’t have to worry about a “bad” update and I appreciate the easy console access through prox gui without needing an ipkvm or similar in scenarios where I’ve screwed something up and can’t hit the gui or ssh. Plus, if you backup your *sense config after any changes you make, in the event you need to setup a new physical box it’s a quick iso install and restore config. For me the pros outweigh the cons, even if a bit of performance is lost.
The data should be scraped and on Archive.org. I copied my posts and references, to share here.
Reddit will get my CCPA delete notice. Reddit is a failed experiment just like GeoCities, Yahoo, MySpace, Windows, Facebook, and Google. I don’t want or need them. The data I shared on these platforms is irrelevant because I am here. Ask away. I am the value, not them.
Shouldn’t be a problem to tie them both together. You’ll want to add check valves on both lines before they join together. If you haven’t bought a fan yet, I highly recommend the Panasonic WhisperFit series. They pull a ton of air, are energy efficient, and are very quiet. I went from having condensation on my mirror after a shower to nothing at all.
