One of the weirder phenomena of the low interest rate era in tech was a tendency to see companies primarily as investments. The goal was not to have a functional business, but an exit, often via IPO or acquisition. I have begun to wonder if that explains what Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has been up to lately....
Reddit seems to be fully aware what users are likely to do in the current climate. Do they think people who aren’t angry will be louder than everyone else, do they have a plan for protests, or are they just letting the chips fall?
What a stark difference between last year and this year. Last year there was the outpouring of support for Ukraine. This year it will be a "fuck u/spez" shit show.
At Joint Base Lewis-McChord's air show just outside of Tacoma, Washington, this past weekend, onlookers and families saw tactical military jets, high-performance sports cars and risqué models dancing on stage in skintight red, white and blue bikinis, part of what organizers described as a "way to thank the Puget Sound...
"This is not anti-trans; this is not homophobic," Alford said. "If this were females in an oversexualized arena performing like this, I would be against it as well..."
Austin Higginbotham, a spokesman for Alford, did not return a request for comment asking whether the Missouri Republican condemned the risqué models present at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord air show.
Did not return a request for comment...because oversexualized women is okay, and his stance was entirely political theater to rationalize his bigotry.
Put anything to a vote
Run weighted polls to make big decisions in your community, like getting input on rules changes or deciding how to distribute Points.
Unlike regular polls, these polls give a larger voice to people who have contributed more to the community. The more Community Points someone has earned, the more weight their vote carries.
This will end well...
EDIT
What they're really looking for are a bunch of whales to drive engagement.
The article comments are linked to Reddit, if you click on "Replies" it routes you to the topic on Reddit where there are posts about leaving the platform.
Oh, absolutely this is the case. Reddit could even run bot accounts to gain a lion's share of points for any particular sub they want to control, thereby stifling any sort of protest or activism authorized by sub vote.
The guitarist, who is British, previously railed against COVID-19 vaccine mandates on a podcast with the U.S. presidential candidate and conspiracy theorist.
So does Clapton still agree with what he said? “My feeling about this hasn’t changed, really,” he insists. “Years later, when I played at the Mandela concert, one of the promoters said: ‘You know that this is your chance to apologise formally for what you said.’ And I thought: ‘You must be fucking joking.’ I was so insulted.”
~ Clapton, 2004 interview regarding a 1988 concert for Nelson Mandela
Oh.my.god. He was insulted? This literally made me say "oh my god" out loud. I didn't even know about all this growing up in the 80's and then listening to him later on in the 90's.
The original article this quote was taken from for Snopes continues:
This sound of heels being firmly dug in is typical Clapton. Though he is clearly not a racist, he is amazingly stubborn. The remark caused huge offence, but he still cannot bring himself to apologise.
“I don’t even think the governor knows what’s going on. I don’t think this is a fly on his radar right now,” Newhouse said, noting that DeSantis is a former navy lieutenant.

Why the fuck does anyone still take Kennedy seriously? This man has done as much damage to the legitimacy of vaccines as Jenny McCarthy...maybe more damage given his family ties.
There are like 2.7 million reviews. At a rating of 4.8 it would take tens of thousands to reduce that by just a tenth of a point even if they rated it as a 1.
Idaho has decided not to participate in a federal program that would have provided $14.8 million to feed low-income students during the summer, a decision that impacts about 123,000 children in need, according to the Food Research and Action Center.
LoglineA shuttle accident leads to Spock’s Vulcan DNA being removed by aliens, making him fully human and completely unprepared to face T’Pring’s family during an important ceremonial dinner....
I thought the same thing myself. I do agree with Spock's motivation and the way handled it; I think T'pring's response of taking time apart is definitely emotionally motivated. As Spock mentioned that Vulcans feel more intensely than humans, assuredly T'pring (because she does truly love Spock) was quite angry and hurt he didn't disclose that he was human.
The time apart might be necessary for T'pring to realize that Spock's actions were the best course of action given the circumstances.
The most XO thing that Una has done throughout the entire series run is question junior officers about Enterprise Bingo.
Seriously though as a former sailor I can verify that an XO's job is tedious and boring. It's all paperwork, inspections, and disciplinary crap outside of Captain's Mast (yet an XO does most the work for that before a CO sees anything). The bulk of Una storytelling that we've seen is pretty great. Ortega is the one who needs to shine at this point. She hasn't had much story development.
After some further thought, I have to make the observation that I think T'pring knew something was wrong with Spock. There are a few things that T'pring does that indicates she knows that whatever Spock is going through, it's more than he lets on. The main indication, to me, is when she held his hand after pouring the tea, which has to be excruciating to Spock. She helps him while he's pouring the water to ensure the tea is properly steeped. She initiates the end of the Ritual of Awakening; interrupting her mother because the timer has expired. She defends the memory Amanda and Spock share. I love T'pring because, regardless of the circumstance, she stands beside Spock and defends him in the best way possible.
Unfortunately, by the time she realizes something is amiss, they are committed to the ritual and they cannot get out of it even if she would want to delay it. I still think that Spock, at the time, chose to not disclose his condition for good reasons. I'm still on the fence that T'pring would've accidentally revealed that during the mind meld with her mother. I'm still onboard that Spock made the correct decision, however I can say that he should of at least disclosed that something was amiss a little later on.
I mentioned in another post that I think T'pring, despite asking for time apart, eventually realizes that Spock omitting his current condition was entirely justifiable. I think she's hurt, but she then understands Spock's point of view (as logic would dictate) that omitting disclosure was the best path forward with the highest probability of success.
Earth Final Conflict is also an interesting series. It was developed by Roddenberry, and produced by Majel Barret. I enjoyed watching it when it was in syndication.
There’s something about the TNG theme (played during the opening credits) that seems unique and special to my ear. But I don’t know about music and orchestral production to make sense of it....
Faced with composing a new Star Trek theme for the film, Goldsmith initially struggled for inspiration, and proceeded to compose as much of the score as possible before the need to develop the main title theme. His initial score for the scene in which the newly-refit Starship Enterprise is revealed to the audience was not well received by the filmmakers, director Robert Wise feeling that it lacked a strong thematic hook and evoked sailing ships. Though somewhat irked by its rejection, Goldsmith consented to re-work his initial idea and finally arrived at the Star Trek theme which was ultimately used.
The theme is distinct. I had always correlated the theme with TNG until I watched The Motion Picture several years after TNG. I did not recognize that the theme was used in both. It's amazing because it almost didn't exist, and was composed after pretty much the rest of the score was complete. Goldsmith had to rework it because the director wanted a "strong thematic hook."
• The title refers to the Homer’s “Odyssey” when Odysseus’ voyage reached the land of the Lotus-eaters. These people’s primary food source was the fruit and flowers of the lotus, which was powerfully narcotic, and caused those of Homer’s crew who ate it to forget their desire to return home....
She didn't have Pike cover for her because she turned herself in. When exactly that happened in the four months between her telling Pike and her actual confession is unknown.
During the hearing Una was asked when she told Pike, and it comes out that 4 months had elapsed. I don't recall if it's four months between her telling Pike and turning herself in, or her arrest.
I think it depends, on a few factors. Patel and Pike were both around the Neutral Zone at the beginning of the episode (A Quality of Mercy), so the Enterprise and Cayuga are in general proximity to each other. Patel mentions that she has a "date on the far side of the Neutral Zone," so I think it's safe to assume here that they are headed in opposite directions.
Dependent upon how much time the episode actually covers; how much time elapses between the Enterprise and Cayuga going their separate ways and Pike making their way to Outpost 4 (I assume they traveled there), that would take some time.
This also depends on where and when Una turned herself in too. She would have sent the message to Starfleet, who would in turn have to contact the nearest ship (here the Cayuga), and then have Patel rendezvous with Enterprise.
I think a week is a conservative estimate...but I'm also looking for Stardates, and unfortunately I can't make any sense out of them.
Congrats on the initial guidelines, I believe they are a great step forward for the community! Glad to have participated in some of the conversation. To me, this is an exciting development in forming a new community within our respective instant.
- Do you want this magazine to only be U.S. politics, or is it okay for politics from other countries to be posted here? On that note, should it go without saying that all content must be in English?
I think we should embrace politics from not only the U.S., but from other countries as well. I believe it fosters a robust community.
- Do you want a Discussion-style thread in this magazine based on the description above? Would you want this style of thread if the description was tweaked?
I love the idea of discussion-style threads and wonder if they could be incorporated into microblogging. I have no problem if they're included in the main threads of the community, however wonder if microblogging is the best place for them. Open for discussion and further input from the community on this...overall, not a deal breaker on the community decision, as long as the discussions are labeled as such in the thread
- What should the consequences be for violating community guidelines? What should the consequences be for violating the submission rules?
I believe a "3 strikes your out" consequence structure is applicable. 1st offense, warning...2nd offense a week...3rd offense ban.
- Would anyone like to volunteer to help with QoL issues in this magazine such as rebooting our magazine image? With CSS or JS design?
I wish I had the background to help here, yet I don't. I only hope that some of the ideas I've provided have positively contributed to setting up the community. I look forward to contributing and commenting for a long time.
Thanks everyone for all the hard work!
@HandsHurtLoL I've really enjoyed conversing, and sharing ideas with you throughout the process.
That episode is forever known as the "Enterprise Bingo" episode. I absolutely loved the sub-plot with Una and La'an. It's one of my favorite episodes of Season 1.
I disagree. I really enjoy this show and I can give the writers some creative license as a prequel for a show that's almost sixty years old.
Spock has to have a moment of crisis that brings him to the state of character he's in in TOS. I think there's plenty of room to breathe over the course of the show to allow that. I haven't watched The Cage in several years, so I don't exactly recall, however from what I do recall, Spock shows a lot more emotion in the pilot vs. the beginning of the series with Kirk.
It seems that fan feedback is one of the reasons SNW exists. Which is fine; fan write-in campaigns and petitions are central to Star Trek.
I do agree that a series outside TOS would be enjoyable, however that doesn't seem to be in development right now (actually nothing is really in development right now). More than likely, I wouldn't be surprised if Paramount pushed Star Trek: Legacy as a series after reception to the finale of Picard.

Based off Rule #3 I would believe that it's unspoken. However I think it should be added. I for one liked that r/politics had this rule. This magazine doesn't have to mirror that, however I believe it's worth consideration.
That said, Rule #3 could be extended to editorialized media, unless specified that the "editorializing/opinion/commentary" is OP's. That's something that should be included.
Could it be geared to allow content around editorialized content from news sources (e.g. NYT, WaPo, Newsweek, etc.)? Maybe a comment that says sensationalized content/clickbait will not be allowed.
I would probably focus on the lede instead of the nut graf. At least the first paragraph that answers who, what, how, where, why is of importance. Getting into the nut graf might be somewhat complex in some articles, as with many (I'm currently looking at a Forbes article) the nut graf is bullet-point summarized after the lede.
Or maybe either one will do. Although I'd believe that contributors will probably post the lede over the nut graf of an article due to ease or confusion.
Usually the first paragraph is the lede, while the nut graf is the next paragraph or set of paragraphs.
For instance (the article I was referencing): here
The lede:
Twitter’s revenue from U.S. advertising in April was down 59% from the previous year, the New York Times reported Monday, after major advertisers left the social media platform following billionaire Elon Musk’s takeover—though Musk claimed two months ago the site was “breaking even.”
Nut graf:
Twitter made $88 million in U.S.-based advertising sales during a five week period starting April 1, down 59% from April 2022, the Times reported, citing an internal presentation and seven Twitter employees.
The social media company estimates its U.S. ad revenue will be down at least 56% each week in May, compared to last year, per the Times.
Twitter’s global ad revenue this year is estimated to be 28% lower than it was in 2022, at around $3 billion, according to research firm Insider Intelligence, as Twitter’s top 50 advertisers are spending markedly less since Musk took over the company in October.
I think either or would be acceptable in the body of the post, however I do believe that most users will post the lede over the nut graf just because it's the first paragraph and the most convenient.
EDIT
At least that's my interpretation of the difference between the two. You might be correct in that we're describing the same things, however I see a lot of articles structured like the linked article in Forbes. Seemingly where a lede and a nut graf are both present.
