What happened to my background/desktop? ( lemmy.world )

After an update I noticed discover was this weird yellow color, I opened settings and noticed it too was yellow, thinking it was some bug, I restarted PC, now everything is yellow. I tried inverting colors but that is something completely different. I'm not even sure what was updated to cause this....

@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Your colors are inverted.
The accessibility icon never follows accent color, and firewall is always red not blue.
Something is swapping your colors around.
Maybe color correction for the color blind?

Blue -> Yellow
Red -> Blue

Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone-link-requirements-and-setup-cd2a1ee7-75a7-66a6-9d4e-bf22e735f9e3

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

They probably mean they don't provide support via the official channels due to the support being experimental, instead you'd report bugs directly to the kdeconnect-mac repo.

@kde another feature forced really hard on users, with Konsole this time: the color preview

I can't remember when this landed in KDE as it just added to the list of "new KDE features" I tried to ignore while struggling to keep focus, but that list never ceases to expand 😬

moreover, the option to disable that color preview feature I don't need is burried deep: the only way to turn it off is by creating a new Konsole profile 🤦‍♂️

Nope...

Is this why Kate dropped Markdown previews?

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. Because it comes in two parts. The
OS level package and the browser extension, if the extension can't communicate with the OS level package then it won't work.

Chdir is a function within C/++ so it's most likely a problem with Chrome, as I'm fairly certain Plasma would be using <unistd.h> properly.. Maybe perhaps installing perl-file-chdir or perl-cwd-gaurd could solve this, but I wouldn't bet on it. Wouldn't hurt to try at least.

Rustmilian ,

I'd take a look at those .desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications/ or /usr/share/applications/

kscreen-doctor -o
Then adjust the below command accordingly :
kscreen-doctor output.1.hdr.disable

Make sure you go open a bug report.
When you do, you can use hw-probe and run :
sudo -E hw-probe -all -upload -dump-acpi -decode-acpi
And use the given link in your BR.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I see you got it fixed.
When you run hw-prope make sure your offending monitor is connected. hw-prope will help identify the monitor by hardware ID which is used in various areas like kernel space and will help with identifying the exact model of the problem monitor hopefully allowing for devs to reproduce the bug in a lab environment.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Which one of these is the problem monitor?
benq or gigabyte ?

Edit : nvm, I see you already said Gigabyte.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Looking through the probe logs, and seeing that your monitor is using EISA bus and works fine without HDR, there doesn't appear to be any issues on the Linux side of things. My guess is that they didn't implement HDR on the monitors side exactly to spec and that's where the problem resides. So, in this sense some monitor specific quirk fixup code is needed on the Linux side of things to get it working properly. If the devs ask any additional steps from you, be sure to do it and provide feedback.

Are you using Wayland or X11?

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

/usr/bin/discord --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland --enable-wayland-ime you should be able to add it via editing it in the application launcher. But alternatively, I recommend trying out Vesktop.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

There’s actually a lot of overlap between Vesktop/Vencord & BetterDiscord as the devs tend to contribute to each other.

I’ve been looking through the docs and BRs, etc. and can’t seem to find info on your specific issue, I did find this but it maybe unrelated. Maybe worth reporting.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I recommend installing hw-probe then run sudo -E hw-probe -all -upload and link it here.
It’ll provide a lot more detail on you’re system.

Rustmilian ,

Ok, so. Device ID USB 056a-0358 is your Wacom Tablet, make sure to include that in any BR you open.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Out of curiosity, What do you use it for?

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I use it for turning off the screen when the screen is locked, allowing background tasks to continue.

We already have a setting for that. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/92292651-fdd9-4a33-92d2-7eadc2df9d79.pngJust make sure to set suspend to do nothing so it doesn’t go into sleep/hibernate or shutdown.

It’s also useful to run things like backups when the system is more likely to be idle.

We already have a setting for that too. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/0c7093f3-0510-4385-8f99-f01cea4d0cdb.png

@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

What I want is not that the screen turns off when the lock timer times out,

This might be a problem, I don’t think you can have both behaviors at the same time.

but that I can push ‘lock’ or a key combination and have the system lock and the screen turn off immediately. The new ‘when locked, turn off screen’ setting should help with this, but setting it too low will presumably make it hard to unlock.

Setting it to 0 will function just how you described, it won’t make unlocking it harder. When the password prompt is open, it blocks the screen off behavior.

For running backups, ‘after a period of inactivity’ could help.

It should work for your case of creating backups when idle. inactivity = no user input or program sending block signal = most likely idle.

It still seems like the removal of a useful feature.

Sure, but for your case I don’t believe you actually need it.

Distro?

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting, I’ve not had any of these issues on Arch Linux. My experience is mostly smooth, not perfect, but not nearly as bad as yours. Mind providing more information on your hardware configuration? I’d also recommend going through your journald logs, you can use Kjournald and kdebugsettings for this.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Use KJournald, kdebugsettings and report bugs, that’s the only way you’ll get bugs fixed.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Does it prompt for fingerprint if you enter an empty password? If not, I have done a little looking around and found a source that states the following :

Add the following two lines to /etc/pam.d/kde :

<span style="color:#323232;">auth sufficient pam_unix.so try_first_pass likeauth nullok
</span><span style="color:#323232;">auth sufficient pam_fprintd.so
</span>

This configuration allows you to first press enter on the empty password field to be prompted for the fingerprint

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Even if it is, I’m unable to find any other solution. It’s at least worth a shot.
Do be sure to report this bug in the meantime, it’s likely related to pam &/or SDDM.

Is there a way to revert back to Plasma 5.27?

I don't think is ready for prime time. When I open apps, the title bar goes above the screen space and I can't move or close the app or use the menus.

Please report the bug.

Is there a way to revert back to Plasma 5.27?

Yes. There is, but it depends on the distro and can be time consuming.
For example with Arch Linux read Downgrading packages and consider tools like downgrade.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. It’s already available in the KDE Unstable Arch repo.
Once it’s made available in the main repo, EndeavorOS will have it.
It’s recommended to consult the migration guidelines when it releases.
