How dense would the atmosphere need to be to result in a cataclysmic chain reaction during a nuclear explosion?

Famously, Oppenheimer and co worked out how close a nuclear bomb test would be to causing a chain reaction of nitrogen fusion in the atmosphere. They made a lot of worst-case-scenario assumptions and still came to the conclusion that no, a nuclear bomb test wouldn’t scour the surface of the world....

Fusion of two nitrogen-14 nuclei and a hydrogen nucleus. That was the feared chain reaction, since both elements are abundant.

Here in the US, our safety net has the punjis poking through it. That way we don't overburden the net by falling on it, the spikes will catch us instead. We don't really have much power to pick employers here, we really gotta pick the best paying job we can find in a really short time. Oh, and can't be switching jobs too much, since lots of employers can deny you health insurance until you've worked with them for 90 days. Isn't that such a fun system‽

Doug Jones is a national treasure

Oh no! My favorite actor playing my favorite character. Truly an awful time to live

I used sarcasm to deflect because you made me feel uncomfortable. I wasn't talking about, nor was I interested in talking about, his recent acting choices or lack thereof. I made an innocuous, positive comment about him because I like who he appears to be as a person. There wasn't an invitation there to debate his merits as an actor.

I would love it, but it would break the Canon of Discovery. No one is supposed to know that the Discovery, or her crew, ever existed.

Misremembered. The Discovery was “destroyed” to protect the secret of her going into the future. Thanks for the clearing up!

Bistromath was such a beautifully strange concept for a ship. I freaking love SEP fields the most from that book.

I had a realization recently that this is what Boy Scouts is about giving to young boys.

Or, at least, that’s the impact it had on me.

Unscripted is improv, which is a type of writing and therefore scabbing. Ryan Reynolds wasn’t doing improv on Deadpool 3 once WGA went on strike.

Reynolds work counted as writing since he’s a writer. Improv isn’t writing usually

chuckleslord ,

No, Maher and Berrymore were told explicitly that if their shows came back during the strike they would be scabbing.

Based on this article, yes and no. A writer improv-ing is the same as writing changes. An actor without a writing credit could still improv. Thanks for verifying

Sorry about that, was a misunderstanding on my part.

The Fox GOP debate melted down when the word “climate” was mentioned ( www.motherjones.com )

After the network showed a clip of a young conservative activist saying that climate change was the number one issue for young voters, Fox News moderator Martha MacCallum asked for a show of hands in response to her question, “Do you believe human behavior is causing climate change?”...

Ah! Finally, after years of being given boiling water to drink, I’ve finally been given horribly scalding water instead. Refreshing! /s
