The standard for criminal trials is “beyond a reasonable doubt.” There’s a whole speech in To Kill a Mockingbird about it.

Good. Every city should refuse to publicly fund these projects, they have never delivered even a fraction of the benefits they claim to. If pro sports leagues just got told by every city worth a damn to pay their own way, things would be marginally better in this country.

Congratulations to my adopted home state for managing to not be a complete embarrassment for five fucking minutes.

I can’t access the article, I’m getting an error that it’s blocked by a content blocker I don’t have installed.

Presumably union families have more dollars to vote with as well.

The response they quote from Marianne Williamson is spot on. The response from Costco is pure PR. A really different and admirable response would be “we encourage unions so we can better understand our workers’ needs.”

The Texas National Guard has seized control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, and is denying U.S. Border Patrol agents access to the area ( www.rollingstone.com )

The Biden administration sued Texas last week over recent legislation signed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott signing that grants local law enforcement the authority to arrest migrants and allow judges to order deportations. The administration argues that the law goes against constitutional mandates granting the federal government...

Dang, two awful groups at odds with each other. I find myself more and more frequently wondering “is there a way both parties can lose here?”

Remembering my dysfunctional family with mom trying to be a career woman but also have a picture perfect Norman Rockwell Christmas and making her subsequent stress everyone else’s problem. Dealing with the “holidays are for family” trope when I don’t talk to my parents or sister and only get a limited amount of time with my kids. (I have a great relationship with my ex, the limited time is due to not being able to afford a large enough residence to have my kids stay with me regularly.) Seasonal affective disorder. The hyper-consumerist holiday sharpening the usual distress of living under a capitalist regime.

Basically I find myself near tears most days.

Not “have stock in,” they are the only shareholders. This employees determine the destiny of the company and who their bosses are.

If they’re not public already they don’t have shareholders as that term is typically used. They may have investors who are forcing them to go public because they don’t want a simple loan payback, they want the bonanza of an ipo.

Why are we so concerned with oxygen production yet we never hear about nitrogen production, though we actually need 78% nitrogen vs 21% oxygen to survive?

Excess oxygen is actually harmful to humans, but all the climate warnings are about losing oxygen, not nitrogen edit: but when we look for habitable planets, our focus is ‘oxygen rich atmosphere’, not ‘nitrogen rich’, and in medical settings, we’re always concerned about low oxygen, not nitrogen....

The most famous is Heliox, 98% helium and 2% oxygen iirc.

Seems a bit on the nose that workers at a restaurant themed around the feudal period are being treated like serfs.

What the hell is this shit? Instead of pushing for the return to traditional pensions, capitalism is celebrating the idea that Millennials and Gen Z may simply never be able to stop working. ( www.cnbc.com )

Traditionally, retiring entails leaving the workforce permanently. However, experts found that the very definition of retirement is also changing between generations....

dylanmorgan ,

Unlikely. Getting high is more often associated with realizing that shit is fucked.

This doesn’t mention one of the big wins from the WGA strike: transparency from the streamers on what people are watching. It’s part of the residuals win, but transparency is huge on its own.

“Leech” is gender-neutral but it does promote the irrational hatred of invertebrates.

Good, we need more and higher-profile worker owned co-ops.

“The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on...
