At the current rate of sediment accumulation in lake Erie, it would accumulate enough fine grained material
to fill its volume
in less than 70,000 years.

This assumes a lot i.e that we wouldnt dredge material, that something else doesnt wipe them out first etc.

Because thats not the best classical analogy for what they are.

This is probably a dumb question, but if we eliminate the hydrophobia caused by rabies, would it increase the survival rate of active rabies?

I’ve been learning some about rabies and learned about rabies causing hydrophobia. This is just a theory, I’m not saying I know anything about this topic to be knowledgeable, but if we could get someone with rabies to not fear water, could they survive?

xkforce ,

Yes. Get vaccinated before symptoms appear. If you don’t, you are almost guaranteed to die no matter what intervention is attempted.

Hopefully those are safe for cats :/

When I was a kid, one of mine brought live snakes into my room that I would wake up to. They weren’t dangerous but fuck I did not want to wake up to one coiled up between me and the door.

I feel like if you give 2 wishes to a chihuahua, what they do with them is entirely on you.

xkforce ,

You could but the reality is that using a semipermeable membrane and a difference in pressure is more energy efficient.

How dumb do you have to be to think the supposed billionaire whose catch phrase is “you’re fired” would be pro-worker?

z values refer to red/blueshifts and correspond to time periods in the universe’s history. In reality thats a vast oversimplification but given the way the comic is using z values, those two time periods are what they were intending to convey

This is going to cover the factors that affect the ability of humans to absorb Iron which isnt quite addressing your question directly but I would rather not speculate about things that I have not researched as thoroughly. Iron bioavailability depends on several factors including what you eat along with the Iron. Citric acid and protein significantly increase the bioavailability of Iron. Plant foods rich in phytate (what plants use to store Phosphorus) bind to and render unavailable metals like Iron, Zinc, Calcium etc but these levels vary significantly between plant food sources. Other metals like Zinc can interfere with Iron bioavailability and vice versa. And normally the body’s ability to absorb Iron is regulated such that Iron is absorbed more efficiently if you are deficient and less efficiently if you have an excess. There are a few disorders that cause this Iron regulation to malfunction either resulting in deficiencies or the complete opposite of this, excessive Iron that starts depositing in organs but with a physiologically “normal” person that regulatory system acts to normalize the amount of Iron absorbed to an extent.

I would reccommend starting with TNG or TOS.

I dont think there needs to be a specific community for every series in the franchise. Especially given that Lemmy communities are pretty small even without the fragmentation that would cause

Meanwhile in reality… millions of documents with cursive writing on them from decades ago aren’t legible enough to be transcribed. Being taught cursive DOES NOT mean your cursive is any good. It is far easier for most people to read and write in print which is why you are no longer allowed to use it on any documents of consequence aside from a signature.

Is Congress Going to Kill Credit Card Rewards? ( www.nerdwallet.com )

Legislation known as the Credit Card Competition Act, first introduced in Congress in 2022, is described by its sponsors as encouraging “competition in electronic credit transactions.” But if lawmakers end up passing the measure, opponents say it could also torpedo the rich rewards and perks that cardholders have enjoyed for...

    xkforce ,

The money for rewards comes from somewhere. And those rewards are maybe a couple percent of what you buy. A lack of competition can hurt people a hell of a lot more than that even if rewards werent funded through transaction fees.

That and citizen tests give them an easy way to “other” anyone they want. Just like the old poll tests that they used to do that were ambiguously written so that they could selectively pass or fail anyone they wanted
