Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone-link-requirements-and-setup-cd2a1ee7-75a7-66a6-9d4e-bf22e735f9e3

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

This feature is epic. Being able to save a file to my phone from my tablet or vice versa is fantastic.

It's not quite as feature rich as something like davinci resolve, which is straight up movie industry level software, yet it's free to use.

And resolve actually runs on Linux, too.

KDEnlive has also had some bugs over years. I personally started editing with it first, but ditched it for resolve due to a bug that would cause audio and video to gradually go out of sync over time, but only when actually rendering, and there was literally no way to work around It. I had no way to turn my completed edit into an actual usable video file...

I am back to using it, and it has improved a ton. It's extremely capable and has all the features most editing projects would ever need.

How... do I log into lemmy, say KDE Social lemmy using my Mastodon account? @kde I'm not sure how this works 👴🏼👴🏼👴🏼

That’s not how the fediverse works.

Your account can only be used from the instance it was created on. Your instance is connected to other instances in a way that allows you to interact with their content, without ever leaving your instance.

You can use your account to go anywhere in the fediverse, but you can’t use that account to access the fediverse through any other entry point, or interact with every feature of every platform. All the platforms speak the same protocol, but don’t necessarily have parity in terms of features.

It’s like you’re standing in one spot, and can look in any direction, but you can’t move. You can see everything, in the way it looks from that one spot. If you want a different perspective, you need a new spot to stand on (a new account on a different instance/fediverse platform).

As an example, because you added @kde to your post, I can see it on the KDE community on Lemmy, and this comment was created on a Lemmy account. As a Lemmy user, I can’t follow you, or see any of your posts that don’t mention a Lemmy community.

To interact with all that stuff, I’d need to use a Mastodon account on a Mastodon instance, to get the full picture.

I also use the dashboard.

Alternative: set up keyboard shortcuts for sleep and hibernate.

Personally I configured the power button to sleep instead of shut down, so I just hit that when I’m done at my desktop.

No. Actual updates will show up in the activity feed with patch notes. Something else is up.

That space is required to run the games. They contain the vulkan equivalent shaders that have been translated from directx, this has to be done for each material shader in each game. Unless they are stored somewhere, it has to be done again every time you run a game, causing stutter.

Shaders will need to be compiled either way, not downloading pre-cached shaders just means the deck will create them when you run the game, using the deck GPU to do it instead of steam servers. It will then store them for later use, using up the storage anyway.

By turning them off, the only difference will be that the deck is now wasting battery power on compiling the shaders on its own, rather than grabbing them pre-done from steam servers.

You might get away with not downloading them all, if you only play one or two games, but this will mean that not all installed games are actually playable, as you’ll run out of space for shaders if you used up the space you “saved”.

It’s worth noting that this is only a thing on the deck. Valve does not provide pre-compiled shaders for any other GPU. (Though you can tell steam to compile them in the background so your games are always ready to go.)

No, it should not happen again. Something is up.

Good thing I don’t know enough people for me to ever go to the movies in that big a group.

You do see the space usage in the bottom right when viewing them.

Oh wow, the prosthetic is really detailed. Funny considering it was only used for a shot of like 10 frames in an epileptic flashback sequence.

MentalEdge ,

True that. Discovery went down a path of increasingly ridiculous galaxy-spanning crises, which always got solved by the same crew…

I fucking laughed out loud when I called that “the burn” was straight up caused by some dude being extra lonely on a planet somewhere. And then the writers patted each other on their backs for such genius symbolism that I saw coming a mile away because that was just the kind of stupid I expected from Discovery by then.

Has someone made a crying montage yet? The show constantly has the characters get ultra-emotional as a crutch to add impact and tell the viewer “yo that’s super deep, feel some feelings now” and it didn’t work even once.

The show is excellently produced, and I enjoy a lot aspects of it, as well as some of the characters. But boy, I enjoyed the writing for all the wrong reasons.

Simpler solution, just add a bottomless pit or small singularity in the middle to absorb excess traffic.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

The joke is that you have to lane-shift to get out, the way you have to in most large roundabouts already.

Something people not used to roundabouts seem afraid to do, hence this is a design that “doesn’t coddle them” because if they don’t lane-shift, they end up in the middle.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

You’re not supposed to ever get to the middle. It’s “technically navigable” because you can lane-shift your way out.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s kinda funny how these comments are proving Randall’s point, that people don’t know to lane-shift in roundabouts.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s a chicken and egg problem. Roundabouts are well-liked by those used to them, and despised by those who aren’t. A product isn’t bad because it’s an acquired taste, and there’s no solution that doesn’t involve trying it until you get it.

Read this as well a good while ago. It was a fun heist story, with a more detailed universe than the barely above average plot warranted.

Didn’t realise there were more books set in the universe.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

I was pretty lukewarm on the new episodes of Futurama… but the latest one about simulated universes was really fun!

Currently taking a break between Xenocide and Children of the Mind. Really enjoying the Ender’s Saga books, the story even gets better after Ender’s Game.

Gotta shout out House of Suns as one of my favorite books ever.

"It's the content, stupid." - Quick Notes to Supercharge K.Bin ( kbin.social )

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yup! Unfortunately the activity seems to be going to the lemmy side of things first, due to kbin’s sometimes functional, sometimes kinda-functional federation.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Damn. That payout is a disgrace.

To clarify, this is how much “residual” pay the writers got out of the show being streamed after production. Imagine being a writer on one the biggest shows on a platform, and all you get for it being successful is like a tenth of a months rent.

It’s possible she was cared for by a genuine good samaritan, illegal though that may be. It’s technically still kidnapping, even if someone underage wants the help to get away from their family.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Legally, if you take in a runaway, and don’t make an effort to get them back to their legal gueardian, I think there’s still a case for it to become abduction in court.

Legally, a child doesn’t have the ability to choose to leave their legal guardian (except through legal child protection channels).

They can’t just move in with a stranger. When does taking care of a runaway, become hiding them? Morally, there can be good reason to keep them from their family, but the law won’t necessarily recognize that in cases like this, where CPS wasn’t properly involved.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Thanks. I was pretty sure it does end up being a crime in a lot of cases, if not a kidnapping.
