If Jordan becomes speaker, he'll try to use the authority to paralyze the House in a bid to get charges dropped against Trump.

stolid_agnostic ,

Fortunately it’s in the hands of the executive branch and he can’t touch it.

MisterD ,

Do you really believe that Jim cares that it won’t work?

He’ll just say that Biden vetoed it. It’s always Biden’s fault.

Stalling student loan repayment was in the hands of the executive branch… all it took was republicans holding the government hostage over a shutdown like the one coming up again if they don’t pass a budget resolution.

Found liable for sexual assault and defamation in civil court isn’t quite the same as “convicted sex offender” in criminal court.

For example, he doesn’t (yet) have to join a sex offender registry.

kandoh , to U.S. News in A Texas judge ruled that a pregnant woman who sued the state seeking an abortion can legally terminate her pregnancy

This is a slippery slope towards mandatory abortions for all pregnant women

DreadPirateShawn ,

No. The court is ordering the state to allow the necessary medical procedure, NOT mandating to the pregnant woman that she must have an abortion. You either need to read the article more closely, or stop changing the words into different meanings, whichever is relevant.

The legal system is a fucking joke

Deconceptualist ,
@Deconceptualist@lemm.ee avatar

Supposedly this is part of how racketeering cases go. Those defendants who flip early get the best deals, basically little more than a slap on the wrist. The next ones get good deals but not quite as lenient, and so on. Because they’re not even the real target. The real win here is the “testify in future trials” part.

What the prosecution actually wants is to snowball a critical mass of the conspirators to all plead guilty and point their fingers at the holdouts, especially the kingpin. That’s how you collapse the whole racket.

If you don’t make them turn on one another then the criminal conspiracy club can hold together and protect each other with plausible and consistent lies. But when some of them start squawking “yep we did it all and here’s how”, the other crooks’ alibis start looking a whole lot less believable.

NovaPrime ,
@NovaPrime@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh I get the mechanics of it (attorney myself) but it still exposes a two-tier justice system where those with power and influence get overall better deals for much worse crimes than the poor and those deemed “useless” for future prosecutions. The system doesn’t care about justice but rather prosecutorial efficiency and conviction rates.

Deconceptualist ,

ursakhiin , to U.S. News in These cities are ending fares on transit. Here's why

Statements like that are why I tend to follow the idea that any government service should be provided to every citizen equally without exception.

We spend so much money in the US trying to make sure only the “correct” people are receiving things like welfare or Medicaid. If we just dropped the restrictions we’d likely be fairly close to being able to afford covering everybody with those programs.

Inspectigator ,

This is exactly what Luxembourg did with their public transit recently. They realized they were spending more in upkeep/salaries/HR/computer systems/policy/etc, and just ripped it all out, and made it free.

It’s so much simpler, and so much nicer!

jarfil ,
@jarfil@beehaw.org avatar

That’s the reasoning behind an Universal Basic Income system: deciding who needs financial aid and who doesn’t, is more expensive than just giving everyone a fixed monthly payment and calling it a day.

That is, except for those who think nobody should get anything for free, and are trying to rip out the aid systems altogether.

roguetrick , to Work Reform in Flashback - Mark Zuckerberg on billionaires: 'No one deserves to have that much money'

I'm sure he's self aware enough to know he doesn't deserve it. I think there's very few people that believe that there exists a meritocratic place in this earth and Zuck doesn't strike me as the type to believe he was chosen by God.

floofloof ,

I get the impression plenty of these ultra-rich techbros come to believe that they’re there by merit. They don’t see all the luck that went into their riches, and they habitually take credit for the work done by those beneath them. People like Bezos and Musk may genuinely believe they’re better (smarter, more insightful, more capable) than others. I expect many ultra-rich CEOs get like that, not just in tech companies. And certainly many of those investors who do nothing but mess around with the stock market think they’re more brilliant than everyone who doesn’t.

tdawg ,

As someone who works in tech any co-founder who gets anywhere abso-fucking-lutely believes their shit smells different. They wrap it up in all of this colorful language about making a difference and helping people and “impact,” but at the end of the day they’re there to exploit you and your coworkers to make millions

Bozicus , to U.S. News in 7 Republican AGs write to Target, say Pride month campaigns could violate their state’s child protection laws

Wait, what? Target barely even had a Pride campaign this year. They started rolling it out early, then backpedaled so fast and so far that there was basically nothing in June. Certainly nothing that classified as “sexual” to a sane human being. Also, if they’re still claiming there was anything actually trans-body-friendly in children’s sizes, that is pure fiction. As a trans, queer person, I would give Target maybe a C- for LGBTQ+ - friendliness, and that’s giving them the benefit of the doubt. These scumbags are not only morally bankrupt, they’re barking up the wrong tree.
