Every thread about Discovery absolutely HAS to be full of people saying they don’t like it. Like, great, okay, we heard you for the first five years since it came on the air. We get it. Why are you still so obsessed with it that you have to make sure everyone knows your opinion that it sucks whenever it comes up?
I mean I could name many shows or franchises that I don’t enjoy, but I don’t make a point to jump into the very thread about them and whine about it. Move on! It’s okay to not like things! You don’t have to keep watching it! You have my permission to do something else!
It’s been fun seeing so much of Kirk this season, but does that mean he’s now a regular? I don’t see how he could take a position on the Enterprise for years yet, so would that imply he just keeps coincidentally visiting all the time? Starts to strain plausibility after a while.
Seems to be like a Starfleet mentoring program we just haven’t seen in action before. It makes sense to me that they’d want their rising stars to get some exposure to other established captains and develop relationships with other crews beyond their own. I like it.
But we’ve also never really seen the details of how a ship transitions from one captain and crew to a new one. This is an opportunity to depict how Starfleet ensures continuity of command and crew cohesion when something happens to one of their captains.
I like seeing that there’s a system of mentoring and intership collaboration in place so that when there’s a sudden shakeup in the crew roster it’s not an unforeseen calamity but just another eventually they all trained for. Presumably this is happening all across the fleet, and it could well be that Kirk is doing this with several other ships as well as part of his command track.
It only seems strange because we know he’s destined to take Pike’s chair. He doesn’t know that. He’s just learning and absorbing all he can about how different crews function.
Yeah, except for that damned pus-filled boil that is the Osu logo. It’s a pox that never goes away. I despise every person involved with putting it there.
I have begun a Starfleet Delta, but haven’t figured out how to share the overlay template. It’s discernible enough as a delta now that others might wish to join in....
spoilerBasically the title. That Klingon Pop (K-Pop?) was so unexpected and funny. Such a good comedic timing. But that bit was too short compared to other songs in this episode. I am a little disappointed.
I worked hard at imitating the Leonard Nimoy Spock’s raised eyebrow for quite a while. I don’t regret the time spent practicing that in front of a mirror. I never mastered a fully raised eyebrow, but I can do a slight eyebrow raise....

I actually really like Kirk being intricately tied to the Enterprise in intimate ways in the years before getting command of it. Trek has never really dealt with how a ship passes hands to a new captain, and I enjoy that Kirk is being given the chance to form relationships with the ship and members of the crew well before anyone even considers that he might one day be its captain. Never mind that Pike is uniquely well aware that his own time is limited and he wants to make sure that his ship is in good hands, so vetting Kirk in this way by encouraging this kid of collaboration is also a reflection of his own strengths.
And just in a broader sense it’s always neat to see Federation ships collaborating. I’d like to see more of it, honestly. Sure, starship crews are often isolated from one another, but they’re also designed and trained to work together on missions whenever possible, and I like the excuse to explore that dynamic with Kirk.
That definitely was a funny surprise. Up until that point I had assumed that the Klingons would be doing their own style of music, but evidently the reality field the whole subspace network was tethered to was a very specific kind of musical that excluded Klingon opera.
Also more fuel for my running theory that Hemmer isn’t truly dead. I think they’re holding onto him for a surprise return in the coming confrontation with the Gorn.
La’an’s song was the most emotional and heartfelt, but it went on way too long.
Uhura had the best song and the best performance, I thought. Celia Rose Gooding is a goddamned treasure, and it’s a treat to see them finally really putting that character to good use on a consistent basis.
I love a good comedy relief Klingon moment. They nailed that. It was just goofy and unexpected enough to get a good laugh and they knew just when to cut it off before it overstayed its welcome.
If I could make one tweak I would have made the music itself feel less 2020s contemporary and given it more of a funky 1960s flavor, because I could absolutely see TOS doing something like this.
Was it just me, or did Pelia have a winking look when she suggested that, as if she knew exactly what would happen? Or maybe that’s just Pelia all the time…
On the other hand, she made a breakthrough in actually opening up to Kirk, and he didn’t reject her for it. If anything, him being unavailable for other reasons may be a relief to La’an, releasing her to focus on other things now that she knows that door is closed to her (at least for now).
Yep, there they are. It’s less noticable because everyone wears pants/leggings under them, unlike in TOS/TNG, where a skirt/skant meant bare legs. The effect is almost more like a long tunic or jacket.
Maybe Pike keeps the ship’s environmental settings a little colder than the others, so nobody wants to free the knees.
I really dislike when ships or planets in Trek get named after real world people like, say, Terry Matalas (cough cough) or some producer’s niece. This one seems to be one of those, since there is apparently no historical precedent for it in-universe or out.
I’m guessing that it’s some producer’s niece who drew a spaceship with crayons, and the design is based on that. Not a fan.
SNW is an anomaly in that it started as a spinoff to a show that was already contentious within fandom. Unlike previous iterations that began while another show was still on the air, SNW benefited from comparison to the already existing show. Fans were hungry for something different.
Credit is definitely owed to Discovery for giving us this iteration of Pike, Una, and Spock. Flawed and uneven as that show is, they did hit this one out of the park.

Aha, makes sense! I had all but written off ComicCon because I figured the strikes would put the kibosh on most of the panels and other appearances, but I guess the studios will still roll out their stuff there. Cool beans.
