Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the oldest Black fraternity in the country, is moving its 2025 conference from Orlando due to the 2024 Republican presidential hopeful's "harmful, racist, and insensitive policies against the Black community," reported the Tallahassee Democrat.

Sadly, DeSantis and his ilk probably see this as a win for keeping a bunch of black people out of the state.

    Drusas ,

So far, that is mostly to do with hurricanes and the requirement that insurers replace roofs (even if there is shoddy evidence that they were damaged in a hurricane).

In the future, the state flooding will definitely be added to a list.

The comment was not meant to be a threat but a statement of fact--you are welcome to participate or not.

Our rules, in fact, are entirely based on community feedback. Before implementing them, we had multiple discussions on what the users of the magazine wanted to see. We will also be reviewing the rules at a later date, so that people can share feedback on what they have liked and what they would like to see changed. However, we've had rules for something like two weeks at this point, so it's a little soon for that. You would be perfectly welcome to create a meta discussion on the topic. If one of the rules turns out to need addressing promptly, I'm sure we can do so, and that will also be based on community feedback.

Finally, no, we don't ban people just because they get angry about something and/or ask to be banned.

A Times-Picayune story about the immense heat inside prisons noted that voters in Jefferson Parish, the second-largest parish in the state, approved a new local jail in 2014 but only after leaders promised the jails wouldn’t be air-conditioned.

In other words, there are people who believe that people convicted of crimes, or merely accused of crimes, are supposed to suffer this way.

The government is subjecting people, even young people, in prison to extreme heat conditions, solitary confinement, violence and other abuses because it apparently doesn’t see such people as human. Adults sentenced to Angola have to do hard labor in the punishing sun. They are seen as the property of the state to be used as needed.

Emphasis mine. Jesus christ, people can be pure evil. I'm sure almost every one of them thinks they're a good Christian as well.

    Drusas OP ,

Not only did the police target this black man for essentially no reason (really? You chase a driver, which is dangerous to the entire community, because he's missing a mud flap?), the responding officers gave mixed commands at the same time, and then assaulted him with a dog while he had already surrendered.

Anyone want to bet that the culprit here gets a paid vacation while his department investigates and finds no wrongdoing?

We need to redo the police system in the US from the ground up.

    Drusas OP ,

Don't forget the power tripping. That's a big part of the point as well.

    Drusas OP ,

My thought exactly. He probably didn't stop because he knew he was targeted and was in danger. And he was right.

    Drusas OP ,

And he was clearly right to be.

    Drusas ,

I didn't see them say that. It's a pretty factual statement that fracturing the Democratic vote is excellent for the Republican Party.

    Drusas ,

Frankly, I don't think third parties can do anything other than fracture a voting block until we get rid of first past the post.

    Drusas ,

I have never in my life been registered as either Democrat or a Republican, so you're preaching to the choir there. It's still the case that a left-leaning third party historically benefits the Republican Party by diluting the left-leaning voter pool.

    Drusas ,

Of course they can and they should. I personally happen to believe that the only way that can happen is to move the Democratic Party further left, until we can get rid of first past the post. Once first past the post is gone, parties will have more equal footing.

    Drusas ,

I don't necessarily disagree. The Democratic Party has moved left in some areas, but it's pretty far right when it comes to economic ones. We need more options, but we don't have them. I suppose fracturing the vote is better than busting out the guillotines.

    Drusas ,

    I appreciate your optimism.

Edit: Kbin bug won't let me nest this where it belongs, but I'm leaving it.

    Drusas ,

This is why I specifically say "left-leaning".

    Drusas ,

Okay, so what's keeping Democrats from offering something enticing?

    Bribery campaign donations and lobbying.

Both parties are shit, but that doesn't mean that we should allow the shittier one to reign.

    Drusas ,

So what are you doing and recommending? Voting and campaigning are currently the only ways available to keep fascists out, unless you are suggesting violent revolution.

    Drusas ,

Hi @pinkdrunkenelephants (great username, by the way), could you please take a moment to edit your title to add a label? It looks like "analysis" would be the best one for this article.

The mod team just recently finalized (for now, we will review later based on community feedback) some posting guidelines which you can find in the sidebar or magazine info page. One of the guidelines is to begin your titles with a label so readers know whether it is news, opinion, editorial, or analysis. Thank you!

    Drusas ,

These restrictions on bodily autonomy are both heartbreaking and infuriating, but I am very glad to read that they are having consequences for the states who are rolling them out. Losing out on doctors, losing out on college students, losing out on vacationers. Their governments and people can start to see the results of their actions.

    Drusas ,

It's amazing that other states have declined so rapidly and dramatically that Missouri has moved up to only the sixth worst state to live in in the country! As I recall, they and Alabama have historically vied for the top spot (or bottom spot, as it were).

Here are the allegedly 10 worst states to live in, from the article linked in this one:

    1. Texas
    2. Oklahoma
    3. Louisiana
    4. (tied) South Carolina
    5. (tied) Alabama
    6. Missouri
    7. Indiana
    8. Tennessee
    9. Arkansas
    10. Florida

They want the housing to be built around it and the tree preserved. A perfectly reasonable compromise at a time when we need both more housing and more green space/canopy cover.

And anyway, having that tree there will increase those property values.

    Drusas ,

The biggest change the new rules involve is that everyone should add a label (news, editorial, opinion, or analysis) at the beginning of their submission's title.

    Drusas ,

It just means to start your title with a label such as "News:" or "Editorial:". You can see details in the sidebar.

    Drusas ,

No worries, most of us are! And it's a brand new rule in any case. Will take everyone some getting used to.

    Drusas ,

It is very secure. Washington state has been using it for years. Every single citizen gets a ballot mailed to them for every election. It does wonders to increase voter turnout (of course, high voter turnout is largely detrimental for Republicans in elections, so they don't like this practice).

    Drusas ,

Pretty sure this poster is not a bot. There are plenty of people out there who sincerely believe, shall we say, things that are factually incorrect. There are also tons of trolls. Could be either.

    Drusas ,

Thanks for sharing those stats! It sure has been noticeable.

Dark Money - Clarence Thomas got a personal media campaign worth at least $1.8 million from conservative nonprofit groups led by lobbyist Leonard Leo, part of $1.6 billion in donated by Barre Seid to Leo. ( www.washingtonpost.com )

Leo is well-known for shepherding conservative judicial nominees, but the public relations campaign shows how he has continued to exert influence in support of right-leaning justices after helping them secure lifetime appointments....

    Drusas ,

Charges stemming from the Trump investigation are expected to come between the final week of July and the first two weeks of August....

Oh my gosh, it's like Christmas Eve!

    Drusas OP ,

It's absolutely infuriating and just gets worse as the article goes on.

This town doesn't even hold elections so that it can keep its white families in power. It's shocking that somewhere in the US has gotten away with this for so long.

    Drusas OP ,

Yes, it is. Plenty of districts get away with racism and other oppression through voter suppression and gerrymandering, but they at least have elections, corrupted though they may be.

    Drusas OP ,

    Me too.

    Drusas ,

Wow, what a heinous woman. Thanks for sharing--I'd never heard of her before this.

Democrats urge US Supreme Court ethics reform as panel set to vote ( www.reuters.com )

Democrats on Thursday sought to make the case for legislation to mandate a binding ethics code for the U.S. Supreme Court after revelations that some conservative justices failed to disclose luxury trips and real estate transactions, with a Senate panel set to vote on the measure.

    Drusas ,

It has no chance of passing the House, anyway. It's a good initiative, but House Republicans have already made it clear that they won't even consider it.

    Drusas ,

Excuse me, but "a healthy baby"?

Anyone could have a child that doesn't turn out healthy, but is perfectly capable of living a life.

    Drusas ,

While I sympathize with those who don't have houses to sleep in, as a disabled person, I will point out that blocking the sidewalk at all makes it unusable for many disabled people. Not just "completely blocking" the sidewalk, as is mentioned in this article. It does constantly feel that the city and the country care more for the homeless than they do for the disabled. It sure would be nice if they really cared about either.

    Drusas ,

As a D2 resident, I have felt unimpressed by my options for as long as I can recall.

    Drusas ,

I'd find it to be an invasion of privacy to have my mileage tracked, but on the other hand, people will underreport their miles if it's up to self-reporting. The only way to do this properly is to not have self-reporting.
