My wife and I skyrocketed in our careers. How? Between 1997 and 2008 we did exactly the opposite of what our parents recommended and kept hopping jobs. My longest stint at any one place was 18 months and hers was two years. When we realized that our skill sets were too expensive and rare to waste at a single project, we started our own consulting firm and continue to cycle through projects regularly.

Remember, whether you are self-employed or employed by someone else, you ultimately work for yourself. Act accordingly and guard your self-interests.

I found that to be the opposite. All of our clients have come to us via word of mouth and all of our initial clients were referrals from past colleagues. Because we jumped around so much we ended up with a very large network of ex colleagues that came to us for help once they knew we were available. As. those colleagues also switched jobs they knew to call us if they needed our help in their new place of employment.

They key is not to stay at one place for a long time but to make an impact during the time you spend there.

It's your Rolodex/LinkedIn, not the company's. Also, the relationship between company and employee doesn't have to be adversarial. A lot of people, and companies forget that.

Honestly, it was the right call. Otherwise, states like Kentucky, Arkansas, and Alabama would kick Democratic candidates off the ballot non-stop.

If you don’t want Trump, you’ll have to do your part come election day.

JoMiran OP ,

I don’t think you understand the implications if the Supreme Court voted to uphold the ruling.

Is Trump a treasonous piece.of shit? Yes. Do I want theocratic white Christian nationalist courts from MAGA states to have the ability to block any candidate from the federal ballot that doesn’t bow down to their demands? Hell fucking no!

I do not know, but I hope we never find ourselves in a position where we need to find out.

Instead of worrying about company culture or whether the job sounds exciting, the first thing Kaneshina looks for when job searching is the salary. “Right now there’s this whole salary-transparency movement. So a lot of the roles I apply to I know about the pay right off the bat,” she said. Once satisfied with the pay range, Kaneshina digs into the company — are they doing work she has experience with? Then she checks whether the opening provides room for growth — how long until she could get a promotion? For her to apply, all three factors have to line up.

Tech field Gen-X here. When did the above stop being a normal expectation? It sure as shit was when myself and all my contemporaries were starting out. Compensation package, culture and growth were always part of the pitch when employers made job offers.

That’s not how supply and demand works. If you raise minimum wage so that it can pay for a two bedroom apartment, then demand for two bedroom apartments will skyrocket pushing the price put of range once more. The only way to do this is to couple the wage increase with artificial availability by creating rent controlled, minimum wage housing.

I live in the “Greater Jackson Hole” metro area which includes two Teton counties. One in Wyoming and one in Idaho (Wydaho). Our area is full of billionaires as well as double and triple digit millionaires. You will never see a “conservative” area with more aggressive nature conservation efforts than here. Why? Because the area is paradise and the billionaires have bought all the land in order to keep it pristine (and get a nice tax break). Unfortunately, everyone tried to move here during and after lockdown and now prices are ludicrous. The thing is that the rich still need services and workers to keep that quality of life up. What was the fix? They built affordable housing for the local workforce. Some of these include store/shop spaces on the first floor for practically zero rent as long as your business is helpful to the community or raises the quality of life. So many artisinal bakeries, coffee shops, yoga/Pilate’s studios, high end dog supplies and grooming, cultural artifact shops, etc. Seriously, the entire population of the area is roughly about 30k and I have access to more top tier coffee shops here than I did in the infamously hipster Austin, Texas.

If you ever want to know what systems will be effective, just look at what the mega-rich do for their own self-interest.

EDIT: During the early days of the lockdown, private jets were flying in with medical equipment (respirators) and supplies for the entire community. A billionaire couple donated some of the first COVID-19 blood test machines in the nation. If you tell me that in five years this area will have government subsidized living wages and free healthcare for all, I will believe you…as long as the program is tied to local service industry employment because the mega-rich won’t do anything unless it benefits them somehow.

JoMiran ,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes. That’s literally what I am trying to say. In a capitalist system, it is not enough to increase wages because the system will automatically adjust. Billionaires in my area inadvertently proved that the best way to increase quality of life is by introducing heavily subsidized programs. GASP…socialism

As a fifty year old I would like to point out that I did not officially reach legal age (18) until the 1990’s. I am “older”. Who you mean are what we colloquially refer to as “old as fuck”.

Only top tier talent. Mid tier, sometimes. Low tier, hardly ever.

About 90% of my firm’s workload is now international and for premium rates. Eventually, if the American geopolitical instability continues to rise, we (the top tier talent) are just going to leave. You can make your dollars while chilling on a Croatian beach front villa just as easily as you can while living in a one bedroom studio in a state that bans abortion, clean air, clean water, books, etc.

I think the comments are cutting Alphabet too much slack. Yes the billionaire is heartless, but he isn’t wrong. Alphabet was careless. They binged on talent because they did not, and do not, place significant weight on the consequences of their hubris. Why? Because ultimately it is the workers that have to pay the price, not the executives that hired carelessly. If you do not force management to care, they won’t.

I always think of Indeed and their CEO. They too hired too many too quickly and were forced to fire. What did the CEO do? Not only did the company make sure the severance package was generous, the CEO took a pay cut too.

A bank account with one million dollars can be completely wiped at any time. This could happen by American healthcare cost due to illness or an accident, or a lawsuit from something like a handyman slipping on your property. A billion dollars wouldn’t even feel it.

We have an entire set of rules for mandatory time off, max hours between rest and sabbaticals between large projects, and it is still a struggle to keep staff healthy. It is just a brutal line of work. It takes a toll on your body too. Shit, I had to get four stents on my heart at 44 and cancer at 49.

My firm has been in operation for almost twenty years. The most common addiction, even if you don’t get physically hooked, are uppers. Ritalin, focalin, energy drinks, etc. Anything that gives you hyper focus.

As far as consequences go, I had four stents installed at 44 and cancer at 49. It should have been a bypass but my surgeon is a fucking rockstar. Had I not given up red meat in my twenties, I probably would have had a massive heart attack before forty.

Mental health is always a struggle, but we try to implement as many safeguards as possible. It’s still not enough.

I am very sorry about your dad. That scares the shit out of me and I think I won’t share that tidbit with my wife. She had a rough time with it as she was not expecting that I would have such major health incident at such a young age.
