All the new houses going up around me look like that. Except for the ones that take up almost the entire lot so they can cram a 4,000sq ft house on a quarter acre.

Everything today is starting to suck because they're all min/maxing. Cars are all egg shaped SUVs or boxy trucks. Movies are all reboots, sequels, prequels, or live-action remakes. TV shows are epic fantasies or raunchy animated comedies or dark supernatural dramas. Because that's what all the metrics say will provide the best ROI.

I wish this Gilded Age were half as original as the last one.

Gov. Abbott is now putting barriers along Texas border with New Mexico ( news.yahoo.com )

Isn’t this against the US constitution? Razor wire along the state border and checkpoints on roads that cross the state border are kind of nuts. I read a comment joking that the wire and road checkpoints were to keep Texan women from escaping to New Mexico, which got a bitter laugh out of me.

The notion of the Texas law man roving around dispensing justice isn't anti-authoritarian, it means they want to be the only authority. Real anti-authoritarians would eliminate hierarchies and restrictions.

    Second: Workers aren’t grasping the managerial challenges of leading a remote workforce.

    I can grasp it pretty well: Shitty managers can't tell if someone's working without watching them, so they're panicking. Managers who can measure their teams output more accurately than asses-in-chairs aren't having a problem.

    As the experts have maintained for years, a flexible hybrid schedule is almost always the proper approach.

    The proper approach to have people sitting in an office on a Zoom call, maybe. I've never seen hybrid be as effective as either fully remote or fully on premises.

    About 10 years ago I had just started at a company that had previously made Flash widgets (weather/sports/stocks) to put on your site. They had pivoted to JavaScript tools about three years before I joined the company, and had discontinued their Flash support a year earlier.

    The very first conference call I had with a potential customer was actually someone who claimed to be losing billions of dollars because our Flash widgets didn't work anymore. They were livid that we'd stopped supporting them, and threatened to sue us if we didn't turn it back on.

    The poor sales rep and I didn't know what to say, because she had started about a week before me and didn't even know we made them. I'm guessing they didn't sue because we never heard about it again.

    tl;dr - Users are idiots.

    You know what would really decimate the cartels? Decriminalizing drugs and treating addiction like the public health issue it is.

    When someone who's addicted can go to a clinic and get clean needles and drugs of known quality they won't be buying it from street dealers, who in turn won't be buying from the cartels.

    And let's not forget the American pharmaceutical companies who pushed opiates for decades in our own internal version of the British dumping opium in China. Can't blame those guys, though, because their drug cartels are all nice and legal.

    A lot of companies with large campuses have gotten concessions from local government, since the workers will increase economic activity in the area. So part of it is also that city governments are putting pressure on companies to get people in, and they might lose millions in tax breaks they got for building in their city.

    Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
    @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

    I really wish they'd give a real reason for it. Just say "When we built our offices we negotiated with the city to have lower taxes and if you don't come back we'll lose that." Or "We don't want the value of our commercial real estate holdings to go down."

    At the very least the workers could be mad at the right thing. Instead Amazon is going to lose its best folks to fully remote jobs first, then backfill with people who aren't able to get a WFH job or have to pay people a huge premium to attract remote workers back to the office.

    That will hurt them worse than the taxes or real estate devaluation, but that will happen over years instead of by next quarter, so they don't care.

    Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
    @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

    Exactly. Increasing pay would be really, really nice. But we can do that and have more control over our workplaces. Worker owned companies would prevent huge disparities in pay from reoccurring, regardless of what the government does.

    Like a wise and angry man once said: "Fuck the G rides, I want the machines that are making them."

    Republicans are doing the same thing in this primary that they did in 2016 which led to Trump's nomination: There's a huge field of candidates, all splitting the vote, so the winner will have a plurality and not a majority. Trump doesn't need to convince half+1 of the Republicans to vote for him, he just needs about 20%, which will be more than all the rest of the candidates.

    I don't use DynDNS but I do have two HAProxy servers, one locally and the other on a VPS. The VPS has a cron job that renews the certs every three weeks, and my local server rsyncs them to the right place every so often.

    Then, on my pihole I send requests for my services to the local IP but on the same domain. Because the certs are looking at the domain name and not the IP the cert is valid both on my LAN and from the Internet.

    Unfortunately the very fact of him being a black man caused a very large minority of people to lose their minds. And Trump was able to speak to those people.

    Despite being from the other side of the pond your perception of American politics is very accurate. I would include that AM radio and cable news "primed the pump" for this, as millions of people outside of the cities were subjected to constant propaganda.

    You know why the profile picture for most conservative men is them sitting in their truck? Because they spend a lot of time there, either commuting or driving professionally. Because they're in the middle of nowhere they don't get FM radio, so they listen to AM radio which is almost entirely conservative talk radio.

    So these Guys in Trucks have heard Rush Limbaugh (rest in piss) and his ilk every day for years, making them powderkegs.
