Inside Out is devastating as a parent of a girl…when they hit that point halfway to growing up and you can’t necessarily help them navigate the new challenges they are facing. Gutting.

I always felt like Kevin is kind of an asshole and the original home alone is a morality tale showing that his family is a pain in the ass but you have to appreciate them because the they love you for who for who you are. The characters are all caricatures and hard to take seriously for me. I’ve watched it with my kids a bunch and never felt like it was realistic enough to reach my feelings 😂

Nature videos exist and in my area you can go to the county fair and watch cows be born….

Is the IRS accepting tax returns early?

I had my taxes all sorted(I’m using Tax Slayer) and was just waiting for them to actually submit the return when it’s time. I was figuring it wouldn’t be until around the 29th, but I just got an email tonight that said the irs had accepted my federal return. Are they accepting returns already, or is that email probably a...

Mine was accepted a week ago, I don’t think this is “early.” When will they cut the checks? Now that’s another story.

Can anyone give me advice on how to solve this T1-11 siding rot? ( lemmy.zip )

I recently bought my first house and I noticed some rot happening beside our garage door. It appears that when the cement driveway was poured, they got too close to the siding and now water is wicking up into the wood. I figure I can cut back the siding and replace it but how do I stop this from happening again?

Save up or arrange financing and replace all of it. Hopefully you don’t have hidden rot elsewhere…

Old Wallpaper Matching? ( iusearchlinux.fyi )

We’re getting our house repainted, so I took down one of the hideous lamps in the bathroom to uncover this. It was certainly a choice, but I think this may have been original to the house (ca 1940). While it’s a bit much, we’re trying to be authentic to the original vision of the house. Does anyone know if it’s possible...

Doubtful on the wallpaper but that original wiring worries me. Do you have plenty of smoke detectors?

mysoulishome ,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I don’t know a lot about electrical but I work in insurance and have seen quite a few “origin and cause” fire reports with pics of wiring that looks a bit like that. Sounds like you know what you’re doing 😊

I don’t know how much I trust AEI’s motivation, methods or conclusions. The same survey also shows gen z are much less likely to go to church, less likely to drink and smoke, less likely to have a girlfriend/boyfriend…and gen x and boomers are more likely to do all of that. Is it true? Probably. But when you are asking a 19 year old and a 59 year old the same question…how do you even calculate what the answer means?

Currently Gen Z included aa young as 11. Are they polling 13 year olds? Because I definitely give zero shits what 13 year old boys think.

And are they polling teenage gen x’ers as well?

Yes I’m joking because the very premise of comparing the age groups with specific questions is problematic. “Are you a feminist” doesn’t mean the same thing to someone born in 2002 as it does someone born in 1972.

If you ask me…a 40-something man, I say yes I’m a feminist because I want you to know I am an ally and support women. If you ask a 16 year old, I would doubt the word means much to them at all. But I bet they will be more supportive of women than our generation anyway.

It definitely won’t

I can’t read that because it’s 2 sentences - ad - two sentences - ad. Can anyone summarize? I didn’t really understand what he was trying to say

The way it’s written is kind of just like a rambling conversation or train of thought…dunno if it’s just me but find it hard to read

I would consider switching to it but the syncing aspect doesn’t work for me…I use YNAB regularly on my iPhone & iPad apps and web version on my windows laptop. They instantly and seamlessly sync with iCloud. Wife and I worked on our budget at breakfast today and both were signed in on our iPads at the restaurant…just refresh and they both match in real time so we can work together. I usually add transactions on the spot using my iPhone and reconcile using two screens on iPad or laptop.

Sounds like as of now you have to manually back up or sync buckets or set up a server or something…no way.

I’m sure there are other issues but at current we are in a very critical place with our finances and this ease of use is very important in my household…

Finishing basement - Colorado

My basement flooded about 2 years ago right when we moved in. Tore out the floors, carpet, and the old 60s wood panels that were tacked to the concrete. No that drainage has been fixed and cracks stopped growing, I want to start re-finishing properly. I need some guidance on the following:...

I do insurance claims and best advice I can give you is make sure you have an endorsement on your homeowners insurance that will be called “escape of water” or “sump pump” endorsement and make sure the amount is high enough so that it would cover rebuild if it flooded. You will never have coverage if ground water or surface water comes in directly but if you have proper drainage and a sump pump and it still gets overwhelmed (or sump pump dies) and the water backs up into the basement from the drain or pump…it can cover you. They often come as $5,000 or $10,000 but if it’s a finished basement and damage could cost more than that, make sure it’s higher. I’ve done plenty of catastrophe claims where we just cut everyone who had that limit $10,000 checks immediately and that’s all they’ll ever get. It sucks.

Hopefully you already know about this and have it…I personally feel like if you have a basement and you don’t have this endorsement your agent may be an idiot. Or you chose the coverages yourself and didn’t know what it was.

mysoulishome ,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah the ground water will never be covered but if you get good drainage, seal up the walls and floor so no intrusion, install a sump and make sure you have that endorsement that’s about as good as you can get.

Recommendations for Budgeting App (that’s not Mint)

After years of Mint I’ve decided to look for other options. Im considering doing it myself in a spreadsheet but before I go that route (not ideal) I thought I’d see if anyone had recommendations on good basic family-budget apps. Would be great if it could link with bank accounts but I’m open to anything at this point.

I feel like YNAB is backwards to how I think about money but it’s the only thing that makes sense for my wife, tried every other budgeting program/app and she says it matches the way her brain works and makes sense to her. She has ADD and has trouble with impulse spending. So we use it. As the data guy (I work on the computer all day typing) I reconcile the accounts and transactions…we assign the money together. For the most part it does what it does fine. It is too expensive for sure and I think there is much opportunity for better features, improvement to apps and the website considering how long it’s been around and how many subscribers they have.

What is Reddit CEO Steve Huffman doing? ( www.theverge.com )

One of the weirder phenomena of the low interest rate era in tech was a tendency to see companies primarily as investments. The goal was not to have a functional business, but an exit, often via IPO or acquisition. I have begun to wonder if that explains what Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has been up to lately....
