Religion is a whispering game between generations. The message is heavily distorted by bow.

bstix ,

Ha, that was unintentional. I'll leave it as a proof of concept.

bstix ,

Evolving evolution in a biblical context? My ass.

bstix ,

I'm not exactly sure of the context of the question.

Electricity plants use the excess heat for district heating. It isn't just wasted.
If we could suddenly stop using coal or other combustibles for electricity production, we'd still need to produce energy for heating.

Transport is different though. Gasoline engines are highly inefficient and produces a lot of excess heat that isn't used even when the heater is on full blast.
It's not much in comparison to power production though, so while it will be more efficient to drive and heat a car by electricity, excess heat from cars isn't really an issue in itself. It's the pollution that is the main issue.

Study finds 1/4 of bosses hoped Return to Office would make staff quit ( www.theregister.com )

HR software biz BambooHR surveyed more than 1,500 employees, a third of whom work in HR. The findings suggest the return to office movement has been a poorly-executed failure, but one particular figure stands out - a quarter of executives and a fifth of HR professionals hoped RTO mandates would result in staff leaving....

It's a valid point.

Most practical examples of out-sourcing has however failed to show any worthwhile savings, while working from home has shown remarkable increases in productivity.

Vulnerability? I thought it was about nukes.

I love gen-Z's attitude towards corporate culture ( lemmy.world )

i recently lost my job and it’s horrible being in the ‘unemployed’ class – you’re made to feel worthless, you have to take advice from people, perfectly well meaning of course, that are basically encouragement on digging your own grave - i love being in the position where i have to do some fake elizabethian courting...

bstix ,

Sure, but let’s face it: Nobody is ever excited to carry out work for someone else. If you disagree, I have a lawn you can mow if you think that work is so exciting on it’s own.

It’s a management task to motivate employees to show up and spend a considerable amount of time of their life working to generate a profit for the company owner.

They can do so by compensating the employees reasonably and allowing them to have influence on how the work is done.

That’s why managers are often more excited about their work. They get paid better and get to make more interesting decisions.

Minimum pay for being told what to do will result in minimum excitement and only doing the minimum effort. It’s stupid to expect or have the audacity to demand anything more.

bstix ,

They can have it if want if they want those kind of jobs. Jobs do exist where bootlicking isn’t an unpaid requirement.

People are different though. Some actually prefer that shit. Maybe they don’t have anything else to offer or they have some kind of pleasing instinct or maybe it’s just plain old masochism, I dunno. It’s not for me and I still have plenty of jobs to choose from. I’ve left job interviews before because the “chemistry” wasn’t right for me.

bstix ,

You’re right. If you can find a work doing something that you find useful, then it makes perfect sense to do it. The difficult part is to find anyone willing to pay for it.

Knights among toner cartridges ( infosec.pub )

(Business people) speaking a language familiar and dear to them. Its portentous nouns and verbs invest ordinary events with high adventure; executives walk among toner cartridges, caparisoned like knights. We should tolerate them - every person of spirit wants to ride a white horse. -William Strunk Jr. (The Elements of Style)

Answering the phone:

“Yes, this is Glenn from very important global company, how may I help you? Okay, thank you for calling. I will need to check that with our local team in Barcelona. Oh, you know Anthony? Terrific guy. I’ll get right back to you on that. If you have any more specific enquiries for our Barcelona team, you can contact them by logging into the web portal. Remember to check your email for the verification of your user registration which you will need to logon to our excellent online support service. Can I help you with anything else today, sir? Have a pleasant day.”

Turning to manager.

“We need to fire Anthony. Yes some dude called Anthony in Barcelona is causing customer contact. How am I supposed to make the daily EBITDA reports on time when my phone is ringing constantly?!”

What's the equivalent of physics constants for social studies?

In physics, it’s common to develop a formula and then stick a constant to explain the unknown. For example, Newton’s theory of gravity uses the gravitational constant G on the formula F = G * m_1 * m_2 / r^2, later on Einstein gave a more accurate explanation with the theory of relativity which does not rely on a constant E...

bstix ,

I believe you mean social sciences. They do that by indicating statistical significance or deviation.

Humanities, like philosophy, languages and arts don’t use formulas all that much to describe their work, but it could probably be done using a similar statistical approach for some things.

My local sewer guy takes pride in his job. Not only does he care enough to know the entire sewer layout for every lot in town, he also cares enough about it to always provide the customer with a good offer. He just wants it done right. But it doesn’t just stop there. He is also the chairman for the sewer industry in the entire country, giving advice to all the other sewer companies, municipalities and other industries.

No, he probably doesn’t particularly enjoy hosing down somebody’s fatberg, but him and his guys usually seem to have fun doing it anyway. He gets paid well be too.

If I got half the pay for having half the fun and being able to take half the pride in what I do, I’d gladly accept the job.

bstix ,

He said no one. I know one. That’s more than zero.

Your acquaintance is wrong and should find a different job in the lying business.

bstix ,

That’s like 10 pinky swears or twice scouts honor. I stand corrected.

bstix ,

The funny thing is that when employees are unionised and getting paid fairly, they can spend their time working on serious stuff instead of constantly fighting against being exploited.

The professional and successful companies know this well enough. It’s all the personally owned shit stores that think the owner himself can outsmart everyone by stealing nickles from their own employees to finance the underbidding of other companies and thereby delivering a shit product. Grow the fuck up already.

Quality work is done by qualified people who takes enough pride in their work to join a union of people who does similar kind of work, instead of winging it like a poorly paid servant.

bstix ,

That’s normal for this kind of negotiation. It would be horrible to unleash the press and public opinion on the representatives who have to sign the agreements. There will always be some who aren’t satisfied with the outcome, but in negotiations during a conflict it’s often a good idea to postpone some of the more specific wishes to the next ordinary round of negotiations, so that an agreement can be made at all. Some things are easier to achieve through ongoing dialogues instead of potentially obstructing an agreement on wider issues. Quite often it happens that a conflict is resolved with only little improvements, but with the following negotiations completing the wishlist.

I could not do that job. At least not like that.

Fixing my drain required breaking laws, pissing off IRC users, breaking tools…

It was taking around 24 hours to drain just ~1—3 liters of water in my kitchen sink. Probably comparable to IV drip speeds. After a huge effort and expense, I finally fixed it without demolishing the kitchen – which would have been my next and final move¹. Sequence of events:...

bstix ,

You need to find the drain outside. Also, your main line might be damaged.

When it clogs up again in 6 months you should call a professional to blast it from outside and do a TV inspection

bstix ,

Whatever the issue is, I think you should clean it from outside and towards inside, instead of going outwards from inside.

This usually requires a sewer truck. Or you can put a hose up the Y clean out. That can also be done with a power washer snake attachment, but at that point it’s easier to call the sewer truck, because these consumer gadgets aren’t really that great. I’ve tried everything and in the end I had to call the truck anyway. You’re already hundreds of dollars into gadgets and chemicals. Stop it. Cut your losses and call a professional next time.

It would be nice to have curtains that absorb street noise.

Some custom curtain tailors offer a fabric that claims to be soundproof. It’s a little pricey. Not absurdly pricey, but it’s also a bit hard to be confident that such thin fabrics can absorb much sound (they claim 20%).

I would prefer to try hacks. I’ve heard that thick furniture moving pads absorb sound well. I’ve also heard that fiberous fabrics can be effective. For the moment, I probably want to pass on edgy ideas like egg cartons. Maybe later on those. What fabrics are decent for reducing sound? Specifically, I’m wondering about carpets or painter’s drop cloths. Not the simple white canvas drop cloths, but the thicker drop cloths may out of recycled fabrics.

bstix ,

Sound insulation and sound absorbtion are two very different things.

Egg cartons are a myth. They do nothing for sound and only create a fire hazard.

Professionel recording rooms might have egg carton shaped foam to absorb sound instead of reflecting it. It has nothing to do with sound insulation. It does not stop the sound. It only stops the sound from reflecting, so that he microphone gets a clear signal without reverb. You can still hear the sound everywhere inside and outside the recording room.

To insulate your ears from sound, you use ear plugs.

Similarly, to insulate your apartment from sound, you basically need earplugs for your windows.

Fixed my washing machine today!

Today i’m actually proud of myself. I’m good with wood, textiles, gardening, trees etc. But metal, machines, electronics don’t come natural to me at all. I learned to take care of bicycles or chainsaws because I had to but those scary household machines never. Until today. The machine stopped midway, full of water and...

bstix ,

Well done. I can fix a dryer but I wouldn’t deal with a washing machine. The combination of water and electricity scares me. Mostly because my own washer gives me a static shock everytime I empty it. The grounding just doesn’t work for that.
