My wife is unwell. I've taken her to the doctor's. I'm sitting here now, on my laptop and working. Because I can and there is stuff I want done. She's leaning into my shoulder, and I'm typing this. It's good for her. It's good for me. I see no issue with that article.

That lady I'm sure could take the day off, but sick kids are pretty low maintenance. So why not get work done? The mother isn't sick.

RootBeerGuy OP ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Sick kids are low maintenance. You've either been a lucky parent or you have no kids.

Gradually_Adjusting ,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

It depends. If it's the usual stuff they mostly sleep and bitch about how bored they are, sure, but sometimes it's not. No reason to circumscribe the conversation to "how sick kids usually get".

zloubida ,
@zloubida@lemmy.world avatar

Sick children mean bad nights, frequent interruptions and a lot of stress. It isn't healthy to add a normal work day on top of that, even from home.

I have many questions, which I’m sure won’t be answered because conservative thinking doesn’t allow that. But mostly I wonder who are they testing and why?

@crmsnbleyd@sopuli.xyz avatar

Maybe this isn’t that much of a lunatic but I’m white knighting non-dairy milk, okay?

alnilam ,

Non dairy milk is great. But he’s right when oat milk costs 5x or 10x the price of regular milk while having mostly cheap ingredients is a scam.

tycho ,

I agree, oat milk should not be this expensive it’s mainly water! Milk is also both heavily subsidized by the state so the price drops and the producer don’t make a lot of margins on it.

crmsnbleyd OP ,
@crmsnbleyd@sopuli.xyz avatar

That’s so true, making it yourself if you can is the best

adriaan ,

How much do you pay for oat milk? It’s like €1.40/L here which is only like 50% more than dairy milk.

Gonna sound racist but deal with it.

I constantly meet asian developers (Singapore , India, China, etc) with this edgelord personality. They come to American conferences and meetups, say some wild sexist shit, and someone has to politely let them know not to.

Some backtrack. Some apologize. Some literally freeze up and pretend like it didn't happen.

Maggoty ,

That last part is a face saving culture reaction. If you're feeling culturally sensitive the thing to do is just move on and see if they do it again.

Many of my guy coworkers have been (and are) sort of misogynistic, and homophobic (I'm in India). It makes me really uncomfortable. Might start reporting people to HR one day.

Just get to know HR first. They might be mysogynists themselves (even if they are female).

We do still live in a bubble in the west. We're fighting for equity across genders and race, while some parts of the world are still questioning if sexual harassment against women at work is really that big of a deal.

mean_bean279 ,

Marketing and clicks. People love being able to fill in with their own judgment as well. Look at how one of the top comments is someone reading the Apple one and saying “I thought they were cunts.” It allows them to feel superior, and allows their ideas to be reinforced.

conditional_soup , in NSFL

In my experience, in the white collar world, corporates really don’t think twice about paying for this stuff.* In fact, they’d really prefer that you just use the company card instead of blasting stupid bullshit like this on social or making yourself sick. This person’s boss probably thinks they’re fucking insane.

*If you’re blue collar, you can usually get fucked. If they do much as buy you a Costco hotdog and soda, they’re going to complain and hold it over your head. Little Caeser’s hot-n-ready pizza is the definition of spoiling your workforce in that world.

e_t_ Admin , in NSFL

I saw a YouTube video of a guy cooking a steak by wrapping it in aluminum foil and putting the hotel iron on top. But an iron gets a lot hotter than that warming plate, plus beef is less bad to eat undercooked.

ryathal ,

This would probably work fine, it might be a bit slow, but a coffee pot gets plenty hot to cook chicken. My main concern would be the lack of fluid increases the chances that pot breaks.

ilovededyoupiggy ,
@ilovededyoupiggy@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sous vide then?

ryathal ,

More like poached or simmered.

Kowowow ,

through in a bit of cream cheese and you could have something not bad

schnokobaer ,

The hot plate 100% has a safety switch that turns it off at a couple degrees above boiling. So it won’t break but it also won’t sufficiently cook the chicken with pieces this large…

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

That’s what freaked me out the most - how thick the cut is.

This isn’t beef. You can’t cook chicken medium rare and expect things to be okay.

Sinnerman ,

"Chunky" chicken soup in a can just costs a couple dollars, you could try heating that in a coffee pot. Add some fresh cherry tomatoes and canned fruit and you have a good meal.

PR3CiSiON ,

I’ve made grilled cheese like this before. Works decently.

neidu2 , (edited ) in Where to start..

"Consultant", of course. Anyone with an ounce of a real career wouldn't want their manager seeing them post BS like this. This reads like a desperate attempt at saying something profound, hoping to attract (easily fooled) clients.

Daqu ,

A good consultant is like a nigerian prince. He filters the people who ask too many questions from the start. That way he will get clients that will not resist his consulting.
