You might've insulated your garage door, but did you weatherize it? You can get decent weather stripping to go along all 4 edges of the door to block off the cracks. As far as insulating your garage ceiling, it's something I've considered too, but one thing I don't have an answer too is how that would affect the airflow or code compliance for my gas furnace and gas water heater, which are both in the garage.

Also, when we did an exterior remodel, we discovered there was no insulation in the exterior garage wall, only in the walls shared with the interior of the house, so you may be contending with that. We had that wall insulated when we did the renovation, and it made a noticeable difference. I've also planted trees to shade that garage wall, otherwise it gets blasted with afternoon sun.

If I had the energy and time, I would put batt insulation above the garage ceiling and also replace my attic stairs, which are old and poorly sealed. A mini split AC would also be pretty sweet.

You might be interested in watching videos by Matt Risinger on YouTube, he does a ton on insulation projects in 70s-80s builds in Texas

I'm voting blue no matter who when the opponent is a Republican every damn time. I also don't support the police actions against protesters, am against the US's ongoing support for Israel, and want the genocide to stop. I'm still voting for Biden and every Democrat up and down my ballot in November. I've got another chance to vote for more progressive candidates when the next primary happens, but until then I've got a ton of progressive candidates in local races on my ballot this November and Biden being in the White House is better in literally every way than Trump being there.

protist ,

This is all your fault.

And if Trump is elected, it will be your fault. Then you can have even more indiscriminate murdering of Palestinian civilians, plus the gutting of our entire federal government, the end of federal protections for workers, the environment, and protected classes, and a couple more Christian Nationalist Supreme Court justices to further erode your rights.

This election is not like 2012, 2008, 2004, or 2000, when protest votes mattered and happened but both major party candidates respected the rule of law. Hell, I voted for Ralph Nader. This is not the same my friend. Donald Trump must be kept out of office.

protist ,

And when I say it's your fault I mean that literally. You are directly responsible by directly supporting genocide

I'm not supporting Trump, except by your tortured logic of "everyone who isn't with us is with the enemy" bullshit

The lack of coherence between these two statements is stunning

What also remains unsaid it "Texas" is not a monolith. In this data, houses in Houston, Dallas, and Austin are lumped in with Lamesa, Beaumont, and Nacogdoches, and I'm going to bet the ratios are wildly different in those places

What reason does your handyman give for needing a second fan in your attic? What's going to be different for your house? I'm assuming your attic is a typical uninsulated attic in the US. I live in Texas, and as far as the eye can see there are houses with uninsulated, passively-ventilated attics. Almost no one has powered attic ventilation. I have a thick layer of blown-in insulation up there, and with the volume of air your handyman wants to move, I'd be concerned the insulation would move with it.

In an ideal world, all our attics would be inside the insulated envelope of our homes, but our building standards are not there. So where you can affect energy efficiency is in improving the impermeability of your insulation as it currently exists. If you're going for energy efficiency, slightly lowering the ambient temperature of your attic in the summer heat is just not an effective solution. Spend that money instead on fully sealing all the holes around joints and fixtures that are currently leaking air between your living space ceiling and your attic, and improving the R value of your attic insulation.

I don't know if what I'm talking about applies to your house, but if so, check out this Matt Risinger video for a lot more detail.

protist ,

Improving the insulation barrier between your ceiling and attic will only serve to increase your home's heat retention in the winter. When it's cold outside, the sun heating your attic is not going to increase the heat in your home more than the cold ambient temperature in your attic is going to decrease it. Before you pay to have this work done I'd genuinely consider whether there are other projects that would be much more impactful you could do instead. Definitely get other opinions from contractors first (never just get one quote for any project, prices and recommendations can vary widely) and see if you can get a certified home performance contractor to take a look at your goals

Meanwhile, Texas is not a low-tax, low-service state, as is commonly held. It’s a high-tax, low-service state: we may have no income tax, but at least one study found that we have one of the ten highest total tax burdens in the nation, with property taxes making up most of the gap. The quality of state services, however, has not improved commensurate with the growth of state budgets. Older Texans feel squeezed in cities where they’ve lived for decades. Younger Texans go to too-often substandard schools, receive substandard health care, and then can’t afford homes in the cities of their birth. Texas politics has increasingly focused on managing the resulting resentment, and the easiest way to do so is to blame outsiders.

So utterly true.

All that said, property values in Austin and the population of Austin are both still significantly higher than they were in 2020. All this talk of an "exodus" from Austin is as much hyperbole as a "Texas miracle." Travis County lost something like net 1,000 residents over the last year (after yearly 5 digit increases for many years) while neighboring MSA counties continue to grow. Oh, and Austin startups were only able to raise several billion dollars in venture capital last year, such a pittance!

It should be noted these are State Troopers, who basically follow Abbott's orders these days, and are always itching to put on a show for the cameras, eg the one above. APD and UTPD don't seem to be involved in this.

Edit: UTPD was involved:

UT Police Assistant Chief Ashley Griffin issues a dispersal order to those present. That statement was read over campus loudspeakers, Ryan Chandler reports.

“I command you in the name of the People of the State of Texas to disperse, and if you do not, you shall be arrested for Violation of Penal Code Section 42.01 Disorderly Conduct, 42.02 Riot, 42.03 Obstructing a Highway or other passageway,” the order reads.

From everything I've seen, this was a peaceful, mobile protest that caused no disruptions until the police caused disruptions.

can you help me formulate an answer to a colleague who is not my boss but feels entitled to tell me how I have to work?

the colleague in question feels that only her way of doing things is the right one and expects me to adapt to her way of thinking and her logic. This is tiring and burdensome because I have to force me to stop doing things automatically and efficiently, but think how she wants it done and do it her way. I work worse when this...

To be fair, "Texas" is in no way doing anything here, people in Texas's urban areas are doing this (urban areas which are often at odds with the state). If Abbott or Patrick were involved, they'd probably mandate that no one was allowed to turn lights off in order to "prop up the energy sector" or some bullshit

A New York judge on Thursday denied Donald Trump’s request for a temporary delay of the penalties in E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case, leaving the former president three days to pay or post a bond for the entire $83.3 million judgment.

I understand if he hasn’t paid or posted bond by then, he will be unable to appeal this judgment, and Carroll’s attorneys can go after his assets directly. And how much time does he have left in the $450,000,000 judgment…? Trump’s real estate being seized and/or liquidated would be a sight

Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, acknowledged during a “60 Minutes” interview that aired on Sunday that “there will be losses.” For big banks, Mr. Powell said, the risk is manageable. When it comes to regional banks, he said that the Fed was working with them to deal with expected fallout, and that some would need to close or merge.

I think they’re acutely aware how unpalatable a bailout would be to the public, and they also know the problem exists and are able to plan ahead, so I don’t think we’re going to be seeing a big bailout here

I have a high yield savings account through a large bank, but linked to my low interest checking account at my credit union, so I can move money between accounts as needed. The checking account is strictly for direct deposit and to pay bills, and I transfer extra into savings, so the balance is never very high.

So the answer may be just to open a HY savings account in addition to your current accounts

Why do trees stems grow new "parts" inside and not outside i.e. why is the oldest part of the stem the innermost "ring" and not the outermost?

Wouldn’t grow something from the inside require a very strong force to “move” the already present one? Instead growing from the last “layer” towards the outside would require a lot less force, but perhaps a lot more matter....

    protist ,

Trees grow layers on the outside, just underneath the bark. This is the only part of a tree trunk that is actively growing and is part of the plant’s circulatory system. All the older wood toward the center of the tree is basically only structural support.

There’s a technique called “collaring” used to remove invasive trees, if you cut a shallow, 4 inch tall ring from the bark around eye level, everything above that ring will die, because you’ve severed the circulatory system between the roots and everything above the collar

I work in the field, and genuinely wonder what you think the solution is? The most visible individuals suffering from chronic mental illness and often chronic homelessness frequently don’t voluntarily engage any kind of help, whether that’s medication, housing, income, etc. When people are brought inpatient involuntarily, they may be legally mandated to take medication, and we often see their level of functioning improve significantly over time, but their insight doesn’t, and they stop meds as soon as they leave and fall back into the same pattern.

Maternity and paternity leave both exist to allow new parents protected time to bond with and attend to their newborn. That time can certainly be used to recover physically, but there are many other medical situations that involve people’s bodies being ripped open in much worse ways, there are medical leave and disability leave for that
