Defed from anything they touch. Quarantine the meta virus. Ezpz

Meta won't federate anyone. They don't want to host illegal content on their servers, that would be an absolute PR disaster for them. And this is what will happen if they federate with a random instance. Even clean instances will want to play tricks on Meta if federated.

They are the prototype of the mono instance federation. They want control. They want to attract the people leaving Twitter. I don't think they care about us, what they want to avoid is that our instances become too big and start to offer an alternative.

gentleman , to Fediverse in iOS AppStore privacy preview for Meta’s upcoming ActivityPub-based app Threads

@wrath Defederate with any instance Meta has infected - including any instance at Mastodon who thinks this is a good idea. I left FB years ago because of this and their boosting of the alt-right

Hopefully no credible Fediverse platform actually federates with their trojan horse. If we let Zuck, or anyone like him, become a major player in the ActivityPub world, pretty soon we're going to end up right back where we started.

RadicalHomosapien ,

Genuinely curious as I'm new to all of this, why would it matter? Isn't that the whole point of the fediverse? If their spyware app interfacing with it is what gets the casual users into it who already have Meta's spyware installed, you can still use the fediverse from whatever service you prefer, right?

@dan@upvote.au avatar

Honestly I think a lot of it is that the Fediverse (especially Mastodon) wants to remain a small community relatively isolated from regular social networks, and a very big instance would ruin that. It’s very similar to Usenet when AOL customers got access to it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September).

Some people are worried about Meta having their data, but anything you post publicly in the Fediverse is, by definition, public. A whole heap of servers have your data, and even today some of the federated servers could be operated by large companies. How would you know? My Lemmy server is federating with over a thousand others… I don’t know who runs all of those or what they’re doing with the data…

Deref ,

You can't be both a small community and replace for profit social networks. I thought the point of all this was the second one.

CynicalStoic ,

Here’s a pretty thorough explanation of why this Meta app is dangerous for the Fediverse.

https://fediversereport.com/meta-plans-on-joining-the-fediverse-the-responses/

I’m still trying to wrap my head around Fediverse concepts as well but the thing that stands out for me is that there is a history of private companies effectively killing open source projects.

For us, the vulnerability is ActivityPub. If Meta begins “contributing” to a foundational Fediverse technology, they have the resources to extend the protocol in a way that benefits Meta only, at a pace that only a company with the resources of Meta can.

djmarcone , to RedditMigration in You will be missed, RIF. o7

Rif kept working throughout a lot of the day yesterday but I finally had a minute yesterday evening, very late, and sat down and launched the app... It worked for a few moments but alas that was only the cached posts. Soon it stopped, for good.

It was very sad uninstalling rif, I can't fathom the obscene amount of hours spent using it, endlessly scrolling my carefully curated subs, be it while pooping, waiting for someone, watching something dumb, or in the middle of the night unable to sleep.

Sigh.

Hey, there's lots of nice people and good magazines and fewer bots and trolls over here, so we'll all be fine.

I'm fine.

Snif.

mihnt , to /kbin in can we not name magazines like reddit and make them better? examples: foodporn => goodfood earthporn => BreathtakingLandscapes trees => weed ....
@mihnt@kbin.social avatar

Calling weed "trees" has been around a lot longer than the internet so I don't think you'll make that go away.

speedycat2014 , to RedditMigration in (Mildly NSFW) Welp, I guess that's it. The single photo that got my ~10-year-old, 60k+ karma Reddit account "permanently suspended."
@speedycat2014@lemmy.world avatar

They permanently banned my 9yo account with 2 million karma for using the “boxes of Liberty” metaphor in a highly up voted comment about Republicans taking away access to voting. They said it was a threat of violence. 🙄 Meanwhile fascists make literal death threats in conservative subs with no consequences.

The site has systematically been banning high volume contributors who aren’t right wing enough for at least the last 3 months. They, like Twitter, are trying to suppress the voices of people who are against fascism. It is deliberate and planned.

ivanafterall OP ,

Not to be conspiratorial, but this is an aspect I've pondered that hasn't gotten much discussion: given spez's fanboy emulation of Musk, we could see Reddit become a lot more right-wing as those voices are the ones allowed to continue, like-minded mods are put in place, etc...which means those folks gain yet another messaging platform. It's not great.

The principals of capitalism align with their interests and perhaps their swing that direction could be seem as a defense mechanism against their better nature and any sort of guilt associated with their, what i consider, morally corupt actions.

CarolinaBlues ,

They gave my twelve-year account a three week ban for reporting bots.

“Report abuse” for reporting comment stealing bots, as we were told to do! Insane… unless you want plenty of active bots.

Chetzemoka ,

I got the exact same treatment for "report abuse" for reporting a comment copying bot. Like, ok. If you want Reddit to be nothing but spam bots parroting each other, have at it

AngrilyEatingMuffins ,

JollyTheRancher , to RedditMigration in I definitely think r/gaming has the biggest banger of a privated notice

Another subreddit posted the date he said it, which I think added to it - He said it on April 19th of this year - https://www.gq.com/story/steve-huffman-reddit-public-tiktok-ban - that aged poorly very very quickly
