The Belgian parliament went a step further at the start of this month when it passed a labour law that has been described as the first of its kind.

But that's not true at all. We decriminalised sex work in 2022 here in Victoria, Australia, and as part of that extended all protections and benefits workers enjoy to sex workers as well.

Edit: This includes things like superannuation (our pensions system) and maternity leave.

    I have never seen a roundabout here in Australia that allows for these sorts of conflicting movements, that would be asinine. Are you saying there's multiple lanes that can exit or go straight such that someone in the inside lane can turn out in front of someone continuing around in the outside lane? Is this a North American thing? Of course that would result in accidents, don't build your bloody roundabouts like that!!

    I drive through three lane (six lane road) roundabouts all the time and no one gets hurt. In fact I have to drive through two such roundabouts to get to the nearest freeway.

    You jest, but we do kind of have something like this in Melbourne, Australia. Except the vehicles that get to cut through the middle of the roundabout are Trams. Plus while they're trundling through, everyone else has to stop and wait for them.

    Trams traverse the traffic lanes at three points, as well as one making an immediate left turn exit. There are four traffic lanes. Royal Parade has inside lanes and service lanes.

    But I also don't have to imagine that at all, those are common here too and I've never had a problem at them:

    Notice how the approaching lane at the bottom left has an artificial curve added to it? It's traffic calming to help slow down cars before they get to the roundabout itself.

    I don't see any conflicting movements here. I have a roundabout almost exactly like this just around the corner. It's not complicated.

    I think it's probably got more to do with the drivers. There are plenty of roundabouts like this where I am in Aus, and they get used just fine. Over here they have a far lower rate of accidents than other types of intersections. We never have 4 way stops either, we just put a roundabout there.

    What is the speed of that street?

    You'll have to be specific, all five of the roads that enter this roundabout are different, none actually continue through it. I think the maximum speed limit in the area is 60km/h though.

    Edit: Also, the weird looking building in the first picture? That's the Royal Melbourne Hospital. There is A Lot going on at this roundabout. Though I guess as far as it not being "bad" it is probably the best intersection they could have built for this location. The cycle length if it were a signalised intersection would be insane.

    I wonder if this also has something to do with the company itself avoiding shame too. Like firing an employee is a sign of weakness, that you hired someone like that in the first place? Or potentially a difference in benefits or a pension that they have to pay?

    Your mum sounds like she’s awesome, but she remind me so much of mine. Self-sacrificing to a fault, and potentially like she struggled to internalise that she needed breaks, because otherwise “someone (could) die”.

    Same energy as complaining about getting rid of the tipped wage because dining out ‘would become more expensive’. If it does, it’s not on the workers, it’s on the manufacturer. Maybe be a bit less of a scab and focus the blame where it belongs?

    The mess is allowing decades of union-busting to be effective. Teachers in my state of Victoria (Australia) are heavily unionised, so US$50k is the starting salary. You would absolutely be making what she is now, $64k, if you’d worked for 8yrs like she had.

    Edit: And that’s just for public teaching jobs. Australia has way more private schools than the US and those pay even more. With 8yrs of experience it would be easy to get one of those positions and be making $70k.

    It depends, some things are more expensive here. But for an example, Baldur’s Gate 3 retails at US$70 in the states, but US$57 (A$90) here. A brand new iPhone 15 Pro costs US$200 more here however.

    The high end for a public school teacher is US$87k. But public school admin pays a lot more. The starting salary for an Assistant Principal is US$96k, and goes all the way up too US$147k on the high end for a Principal.

    Finally, while we absolutely have a housing crisis going on, rent is still a lot cheaper here. I live in a three bedroom house in the suburbs of Melbourne. We have a backyard big enough for a few chooks, a dog and a cat. It’s a half hour’s train ride into the city centre. Our rental laws mean the landlord basically couldn’t say no to the animals. He also can’t terminate the lease without cause, and has limits on how much and how often the rent can be increased. We pay US$1260 (A$1955) a month. From what I’ve seen, it can cost $2000/month for a small apartment in a comparable city in the US.

    Speaking of Unions actually, we have renter’s unions here that will help if you’re being fucked over and agitate for better rights. I pay A$12/year in dues and they’ve helped me out a few times when I’ve had a landlord trying to break the laws.

    Edit: Oh yeah, there’s also not having to spend money on essential medical care, that makes a big difference too.

    There’s something morally wrong with it when you use it as an excuse to pay those workers significantly less. As well, jobs likely were lost, outsourced contracts rarely have the same rights, including leave entitlements, for their workers.

    Even if you compare PPP, they are significantly worse off. Why the fuck are you in a worker reform /c/ trying to espouse the virtues of saving money by sending jobs overseas?

    These companies don’t just move to developing countries because the labour is cheaper. The politicians are too, and they wield that influence to stop labour reforms.

    Worker reform is important everywhere. You don’t get to call it okay that one group of workers is getting compensated less than another for doing the same job. That’s utter bullshit.

    Unemployment needs to jump 40-50%??? Is this guy seriously that utterly disconnected with reality? In Aus it’s never hit more than 12% in the last 4 decades, the economy would just collapse if unemployment got that high. It only got to 32% during the Great Depression in the US.
